UFC 240 was this past weekend and it was headlined by a huge main event as UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway defended his title against the always tough Frankie Edgar. Let’s get right to the rundown.
UFC 240
BAD- Marc-Andre Barriault vs. Krzystof Jotko
I didn’t like this fight much at all. It just never seemed to get going. Barriault won by split-decision. Moving on…
BAD- Olivier Aubin-Mercier vs. Arman Tsarukyan
This was another bad fight, in my opinion. It was a dull slog, just like the previous fight. Tsarukyan won the decision.
GOOD- Geoff Neal stops Niko Price
Price had some good moments in this fight, but Neal was able to come out on top as he rained down punches from on top to get the stoppage. Good win for Neal.
GOOD- Cris Cyborg vs. Felicia Spencer
Cyborg got cut up and beat up during this fight, but she also gave Spencer plenty of punishment herself. Spencer fought well, she was very aggressive, but Cyborg did more and got the decision victory. That’s only her fourth decision win versus seventeen TKO wins. Good bounce-back win from Cyborg.
GOOD- Max Holloway vs. Frankie Edgar
One of the things that stood out to me was how many times Holloway was able to stuff a takedown attempt from Edgar. The toughness of Edgar made a finish unlikely but I thought there was a chance that Holloway would be able to get it done. Instead, he’ll have to settle for the decision win. Holloway’s striking was more precise than Edgar’s but stuffing so many takedowns was really the story for me. That stymied Edgar, who didn’t seem to really get going until the fourth round. This was another big statement win for Holloway in the featherweight division and it’s going to be very hard for someone to unseat him. Big win for Holloway.

Weidman set to debut at light heavyweight
Chris Weidman is moving up in weight to the light heavyweight division, and he’ll face Dominick Reyes on October 18th in Boston. Maybe a change of scenery will do him good, as he’s 1-4 in his last five fights at middleweight. A win over Reyes won’t be easy, though. This is a pretty big fight that could help decide the next contender at light heavyweight. Or maybe the next next contender. That depends on what happens with UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones…

Jon Jones charged
Jones is currently being charged with battery after an alleged incident in April involving a waitress at a strip club. There’s all sorts of allegations and accusations that you can read for yourself if you want, but Jones denies any wrongdoing. We’ll have to wait to see how this shakes out, but Jones has mentioned fighting again in December. That opens the door for the Weidman-Reyes winner to face Jones then. That’s a longshot and unlikely to happen, though you never know with the UFC, but we know who it won’t be…

Corey Anderson vs. Jon Jones
Corey Anderson has thrown his name into the ring for a title shot against Jones. He’s even gone so far as to confront Jones at an autograph signing to talk some trash in hopes of getting the fight. Dana White has shut this down, though, claiming that Anderson has turned down multiple fights in the past month. The light heavyweight division is totally wide open so it’s hard to say who gets the next title shot. I don’t think the UFC knows who’s going to get it next, I think they’re hoping for someone to jump off the page at them and wow everyone with a big win. So again, I think we’ll have to wait to see what happens.
