PFL Tamp: Cyborg vs. Vieira and UFC Fight Night: Hernandez vs. Rodrigues were both this past weekend and featured a lot of exciting fights. Who won and who lost? Let’s get to the rundown.
PFL Tampa: Cyborg vs. Vieira
GOOD- Luke Trainer stops Roland Dunlap
They clinch against the cage early and when they separate Trainer starts landing some powerful leg kicks. Trainer staggers Dunlap with a big hook but an overhand right from Dunlap hurts Trainer just before the first round ends. The second round begins with both men landing good strikes. Trainer drops Dunlap with a front kick he learned from Steven Seagal and pounds on him until the referee jumps in to wave off the fight nearly three minutes into the second round.
Trainer improves to 11-1 and has won 6 straight fights while Dunlap drops to 7-1 with 1 No Contest and has his 3 fight winning streak snapped. Good win for Trainer.
GOOD- Taila Santos vs. Sabrinna de Sousa
Santos is scoring with kicks early while de Sousa is favoring punches. Santos can’t complete a takedown and they trade strikes until the first round ends. The second round begins with de Sousa trying for a takedown again that Santos fights for a while but de Sousa eventually completes it. Santos is quickly back to her feet but is getting punched in the face repeatedly and the second round ends. The third round starts with some fiery striking exchanges. Santos gets dropped and de Sousa is all over her as she rises. The fight ends so we go to the judges to render their verdict.
de Sousa wins the decision to improve to a perfect 7-0 while Santos drops to 23-5. Good win for de Sousa.
GOOD- Gadzhi Rabadanov stops Tracy Reeder
They’re trading a few strikes early before Reeder stumbles and Rabadanov winds up on top of him. Rabadanov starts unloading some ground-and-pound that forces the referee to jump in to stop the fight a little over four and a half minutes into the first round.
Rabadanov improves to 28-5-2 while Reeder drops to 12-6 and has his 5 fight winning streak snapped. Good win for Rabadanov.
GOOD- Cris Cyborg vs. Ketlen Vieira
Cyborg was looking to defend her PFL Featherweight Championship, though Vieira is ineligible to win it because she missed weight by an outrageous 7.2 pounds.
They’re trading a few strikes early and feeling each other out. Both women go for takedowns that get stuffed and the first round ends. The second round begins with Cyborg working her jab, alternating between the head and the body. Vieira is limping now from a Cyborg leg kick but she continues battling and the second round ends. The third round starts with Cyborg getting a takedown. They fight there for a while before standing. Cyborg keeps hurting Vieira with big strikes but Vieira keeps coming forward and showing toughness and the third round ends.
The fourth round opens with Cyborg throwing kicks and jabs and Vieira answering with jabs of her own. Cyborg tries for a takedown but Vieira tosses her and is on top and unloading ground-and-pound that bloodies Cyborg before the fourth round ends. The fifth round commences with Cyborg getting a takedown. They grapple for a moment before standing. They clinch and Vieira lands a trip and is on top. They stay there for a while before getting up and trading some strikes until the fight ends. We go to the judges to render their verdict.
Cyborg wins the decision to improve to 30-2 with 1 No Contest and has won 10 straight fights while Vieira drops to 16-6. Good win for Cyborg, who remains the PFL Featherweight Champion.
UFC Fight Night: Hernandez vs. Rodrigues
GOOD- Anthony Wint submits Terrance Chatman
After a tentative opening, Wint gets a takedown. They grapple for a bit before Wint secures an arm-triangle choke and puts Chatman to sleep four and a half minutes into the first round.
Wint improves to a perfect 8-0 while Chatman drops to 5-2. Good win for Wint.
GOOD- Carli Judice stops Jeisla Chaves
They trade strikes until Judice nails Chaves with a front kick to the stomach that drops her. Judice pounces with repeated punches until the referee jumps in to stop the fight not quite a hundred seconds into the first round.
Judice improves to 7-2 and has won 4 straight fights while Chaves is handed her first loss and is now 8-1. Good win for Judice.
GOOD- MarQuel Mederos stops Mason Jones
They’re firing away right from the start and the action is frantic and fast-paced. Towards the end of the first round, Jones gets a takedown and they grapple and reverse and counter and Jones lands some ground-and-pound until the first round ends. The second round begins with more fast action as strikes are flying from every angle. They clinch and Jones is pounding Mederos with knees. Suddenly, Mederos crushes Jones with an elbow out of nowhere and beats on him until the referee is forced to jump in to stop the fight a little over two minutes into the second round. Wow, what a comeback.
Mederos improves to 12-1-1 while Jones drops to 18-3 with 1 No Contest and has his 7 fight winning streak snapped. Good win for Mederos.
GOOD- Reinier de Ridder stops Roman Dolidze
The action is completely one-sided here, as de Ridder blasts Dolidze over and over with strikes. Dolidze pulls guard but de Ridder just turns up the heat and continues pounding away, advancing as drops elbows and punches as he gets into full mount, eventually forcing the referee to jump in to stop the fight four minutes into the first round. Wow.
de Ridder improves to 22-4 while Dolidze drops to 15-6. Good win for de Ridder.
GOOD- Serghei Spivac vs. Vitor Petrino
Petrino lands some good punches and kicks that bloody Spivac before the first round ends. The second round begins with Petrino getting a takedown and working his ground-and-pound as Spivac defends. Not a lot is happening. Petrino finally advances and lands some good strikes and the second round ends. The third round starts with some striking exchanges before Petrino gets a takedown. They’re up and down and up again. They trade some strikes until the fight ends. We go to the judges to render their verdict.
Petrino wins the decision to improve to 15-2 and has won 4 straight fights while Spivac drops to 18-7. Good win for Petrino.
GOOD- Anthony Hernandez vs. Gregory Rodrigues
Hernandez keeps trying for takedowns but can’t get them. He’s paying the price for them, too, as Rodrigues hammers him with strikes to fight them off. The second round begins with a lot of clinchwork and hard strikes. Rodrigues is hammering on Hernandez and even drops him a few times with leg kicks. Hernandez is finally able to secure a takedown shortly before the second round ends. The third round starts with Hernandez getting an immediate takedown. Rodrigues eats some punches but is quickly back up. More clinching ensues, with powerful strikes from both men following. There’s some real toughness on display here.
The fourth round opens with some striking exchanges before Hernandez tries for a takedown. Rodrigues is punishing his opponent but Hernandez battles back and uses a clinch to repeatedly try for a takedown before finally getting one right before the fourth round ends. The fifth round commences with more of the same strategy from both men. Hernandez keeps clinching and Rodrigues keeps landing these crushing strikes. Hernandez keeps trying for takedowns but Rodrigues keeps stuffing them. Hernandez with elbows now. Rodrigues returns fire with punches and knees. More takedown attempts. Rodrigues then drops Hernandez with another leg kick and they spend the rest of the fight on the ground. Great toughness and grit from both men. We go to the judges to render their verdict.
Rodrigues wins the decision to improve to 20-6 and has won 4 straight fights while Hernandez drops to 15-4 with 1 No Contest. Good win for Rodrigues.
