Donald Cerrone got himself in trouble on Sunday when he dropped a homophobic slur during an official UFC Q&A, discussing the UFC 200 event alongside CM Punk.

Addressing the Daniel Cormier fight, Cerrone chimed in with the following: “Terrible. How you going to give up weight and fight like a f-g, man?”

In brief comments made by a UFC exec (via MMAJunkie.com) on Sunday, it was made clear that the organization was “incredibly disappointed by Cerrone’s comment at today’s UFC Fan Expo.”

“The organization is a proud advocate for equality and Cerrone will be educated on the issues impacting the LGBTQ community, particularly related to the sensitivity surrounding his choice of words today.”

Shortly after that, in a post to Instagram – which for some reason has since been deleted – Cerrone issued a brief apology.

“Earlier today, I said something that was offensive & I’m truly sorry,” Cerrone wrote. “I’ve got so many friends and fans in the LGBTQ community who I let down today. I can and will be better because I respect the community and equality matters!#WeAreAllFighters @ufc”

Penick’s Analysis: It’s not clear why the apology has been deleted, but he made one. It was a ridiculously idiotic comment to make, especially in a public forum which was streaming on UFC Fight Pass from the UFC Fan Expo. Ugly of him to still be using the word in 2016, but just plain dumb to use it in that spot, and he was probably (rightfully) reprimanded for it in some capacity. It’s not going to cost him his job or anything extreme, but the UFC can’t have their star athletes spouting off with comments like that.
