UFC Champ Ronda Rousey hoping upcoming film roles lead Marvel to “seriously consider” her for “Captain Marvel” role

UFC Champ Ronda Rousey really wants to play the part of Captain Marvel when that film joins Marvel’s cinematic universe in 2019, and wants them to know she’s quite serious in her interest.

Marvel head Kevin Feige has already said he loves that the part is attracting names like Rousey; with time open until they move to cast that role, Rousey said this week she hopes the roles she’ll be filming over the next year or more – including a starring turn alongside Mark Wahlberg in Mile 22 – will make her an actual contender when that time comes.

“I’m really looking forward to doing my first starring role opposite Mark Wahlberg,” she said in an interview with ET. “Hopefully by the time Captain Marvel comes around, I will have enough experience and skills in the field for them to really seriously consider me.”

Penick’s Analysis: Rousey’s still young in her acting career, and the results have wrought mixed reviews to date. She’s likely to continue improving in that profession as she scores more roles, so she very well could put herself in position to contend for this role if she does well in Mile 22, Road House, and more. It’s still so far down the line, and any number of things can still happen in both her film career and fighting career, but she’s making it clear that she is seriously interested in the part, and perhaps that alone will get her a look from the studio when the time comes.
