By: Frank Hyden, MMATorch Senior Columnist

UFC Fight Night: Tybura vs. Spivac was this past weekend and featured
a few good submissions but not much else. Who won and who lost? Let’s
get to the rundown.

UFC Fight Night: Tybura vs. Spivac
GOOD- Toshiomi Kazama submits Charalampos Grigoriou
Kazama immediately shoots in for a takedown but Grigoriou and they
stay in the clinch for a while. Kazama is behind Grigoriou now and is
relentlessly throwing short strikes. Kazama finally gets a takedown
and starts hunting for a submission until the first round ends. The second round begins with Grigoriou dropping Kazama with a big left hook. Grigoriou swarms with punches but Kazama survives and locks in a
triangle choke to get the submission not quite two minutes into the second round.
Kazama improves to 11-4 while Grigoriou drops to 8-5. Good win for Kazama.

GOOD- Yana Santos vs. Chelsea Chandler
Santos is utilizing a lot of leg kicks early. Chandler looks to clinch
but Santos continues throwing. Chandler lands some nice strikes of her
own but Santos took the first round. The second round begins with
Santos dropping Chandler with a big right hand. Santos continues
landing those leg kicks but also throws in some high kicks as well to
keep her opponent off balance. Chandler keeps trying to stay in the clinch but Santos keeps breaking free and the second round ends. The
third round starts with more of the same. Santos has the clear edge
but Chandler is too tough to finish and the fight ends. We go to the judges to render their verdict.
Santos wins the decision to improve to 15-8 and snaps her 3 fight losing streak while Chandler drops to 6-3. Good win for Santos.

GOOD/BAD- Chris Gutierrez vs. Quang Le
Gutierrez starts off with some leg kicks before they start exchanging
some strikes. Le gets a takedown and the action slows down. Gutierrez
eventually gets to his feet but the action slows even further until Le
gets another takedown just before the first round ends. The second
round begins with Gutierrez throwing some leg kicks but there’s not much else going on. They go to the mat and grapple for the rest of the
second round. The third round starts with more leg kicks from
Gutierrez. Le isn’t doing much striking. Gutierrez with more leg kicks
and Le doing nothing in return and the fight ends. Just not enough
from either man, to be honest. We go to the judges to render their verdict.
Gutierrez wins the decision to improve to 21-6-2 while Le drops to 8-1
after winning his first 8 fights. It’s a win for Gutierrez.

BAD- Danny Barlow vs. Nikolay Veretennikov
There just wasn’t enough going on in this fight. Both men had some
striking in the first round but things deteriorated quickly after
that. The second round saw Barlow land more but that’s because
Veretennikov didn’t do much of anything. He was more active in the third round but it wasn’t enough and the fight ends. We go to the judges to render their verdict.

Barlow wins the Split Decision to improve to an undefeated 9-0 while Veretennikov drops to 12-5 and has his 3 fight winning streak snapped.
It was a close fight but that’s because neither fighter did a whole lot. There were two 29-28 scorecards for Barlow and a 30-27 for
Verentennikov. That tells you how close it was. It’s a win for Barlow.

GOOD- Damon Jackson vs. Chepe Mariscal
A few strikes to start before Mariscal gets a takedown but Jackson is
quickly back up. They’re clinching and striking and punishing each other until the first round ends. The second round begins with the
action slowing way down. They fight in the clinch until Mariscal
finally gets a takedown. Mariscal unleashes a barrage of
ground-and-pound but Jackson survives until the second round ends. The
third round starts with some striking until Mariscal gets another
takedown. They scramble and Jackson gets back up. Jackson gets a
takedown of his own but Mariscal quickly reverses and gets on top.
Mariscal lands a lot of strikes until Jackson stands up. Mariscal gets
another takedown and punches Jackson until the fight ends. We go to the judges to render their verdict.
Mariscal wins the decision to improve to 17-6 with 1 No Contest and has now won 7 straight fights while Jackson drops to 23-7-1 with 1 No Contest. Good win for Mariscal.

GOOD- Serghei Spivac submits Marcin Tybura
After trading some strikes Spivac gets a takedown. Tybura throws some
punches but Spivac grabs a tight armbar and Tybura is forced to tap a
hundred seconds into the fight. That was slick.
Spivac improves to 17-4 while Tybura drops to 25-9. Good win for Spivac.

Francis Ngannou (17-3 MMA, 0-2 Boxing) will make his PFL debut against
Renan Ferreira (13-3, 3 No Contests) at PFL’s Superfight pay-per-view
on October 19, 2024.
Also on that card will be Bellator Featherweight Champion Cris Cyborg
(27-2, 1 No Contest, 4-0 Boxing) defending her title against Larissa Pacheco (23-4).
Those are obviously two huge fights that should bring about a lot of interest. Speaking for myself, I’m very excited to see these fights and I’m glad we won’t have to wait too long for them.
