Ronda Rousey hosts Saturday Night Live tonight on NBC, taking advantage of an opportunity she says just fell in her lap.
In an interview with UFC.com (embedded below) this week from 30 Rockefeller Center, Rousey said the gig wasn’t ever something she expected or planned to do, but immediately said yes when it was offered in November.
“No, it was never on my bucket list. It fell into my bucket,” Rousey said. “It was one of those things I never dared to hope for. My initial reaction was ‘Yes, let’s do it.’ I found out right after the fight and it was the first thing I was really thinking of doing besides eating ice cream and crying.”
Rousey, despite having acted in a couple of films already, is going to be out of her element on a live stage, and though she’s certainly got her share of nerves for how she’ll perform, she said it’s nothing compared to what she’s faced before.
“Everyone’s like ‘are you scared, are you nervous?’ Yeah, I’m nervous, but no one’s trying to kill me,” she said. “The worst that can happen is I suck… I’ve seen worse.
“It’s really not that scary. It’s nerve wracking, and it’s pressure, but it’s not the end of the world.”
Penick’s Analysis: Whether Rousey is ready for tonight or not, she’s got a good mindset regarding what she’ll be doing. Expectations are and should be low, and it could be a bit of a train wreck, but it’s commendable for her to make the effort and to try something like this when given the opportunity. It might be entertaining, it might not be, but give her credit for trying at this point.
