Carlos Condit concerned about “long-term neurological stuff,” but still wants rematch with Robbie Lawler

By Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

“I still feel great. I think my concern is the long-term neurological stuff. You see me fight, I don’t go in there and not take damage. I f***ing take damage. I take punishment. I’ll take two to give one, and that’s just kind of my style… I’d like another shot at Robbie [Lawler]. I felt like I won the fight, and like you said, it’s a razor close decision. Could’ve gone either way. MMA judging is subjective. I’d like another shot at Robbie. I feel like I should have the belt right now.”

-Carlos Condit talks about likely retiring soon while still wanting a rematch with Robbie Lawler in an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast (transcribed by BloodyElbow.com).

Penick’s Analysis: A Condit-Lawler rematch would be fantastic, but Condit retiring over concerns on his mental health in the future wouldn’t be a bad thing. Any fighter concerned with their the health of their brain would be wise to walk away when they think it’s time. It would be somewhat disappointing to not get to see him compete anymore, but his health is much more important, and he’d be right to do whatever he feels is best for him and his family.
