In some terribly sad news in the MMA world, former UFC Heavyweight Champion Kevin Randleman has passed away at the age of 44.
According to Bleacher Report’s Jeremy Botter, Randleman went to the hospital with pneumonia before dying from heart failure while there.
The longtime UFC and Pride vet fought 33 times from 1996 through 2011, and faced off against many of the legends of the sport during his career. He won the vacant UFC Heavyweight Title in 1999 and defended it once before suffering back to back losses to Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell. Later on in Pride he’d be on both the giving and receiving end of several highlight reel moments, including delivering one of 2004’s best KOs to Mirko Cro Cop.
Penick’s Analysis: This is shocking and extremely saddening news for the MMA world. We extend our condolences to Randleman’s wife, his children, and the rest of his family and friends at this time. It’s a hard one to process given the circumstances.
