Next month’s UFC 196 event has gotten a new flyweight contender bout, as the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported on Thursday that Joseph Benavidez will meet Zach Makovsky on the card.
Benavidez remains the top ranked contender in the UFC’s 125 lb. division, but two losses to current champ Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson have him still on the outside waiting for a title fight. He’s won four straight since his second loss to the champ, most recently defeating another former title challenger in Ali Bagautinov.
Makovsky, the former Bellator Bantamweight Champion, is in need of a win after losses in two of his last three. He most recently dropped a decision to John Dodson, a result which gave Dodson his own second shot at Johnson.
UFC 196 airs live on pay-per-view on Feb. 6 from Las Vegas, the night before the NFL’s Super Bowl 50. The card will be headlined by the UFC Heavyweight Championship rematch between Fabricio Werdum and Cain Velasquez.
