HYDEN BLOG: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly from UFC Fight Night: Song vs. Figueiredo

By: Frank Hyden, MMATorch Senior Columnist

UFC Fight Night: Song vs. Figueiredo was this past weekend and featured some exciting fights and finishes. Who won and who lost? Let’s get to the rundown.

UFC Fight Night: Song vs. Figueiredo
UGLY- Alex Perez vs. Su Mudaerji
They tentatively trade strikes for the entire first round until Mudaerji gets a late takedown that Perez fights off with a guillotine. The second round begins with Mudaerji dropping Perez with a powerful left hand. After a brief flurry they’re stood up due to lack of action and Mudaerji kicks Perez down low. Perez vomits a few times and is unable to continue so the fight is ruled a No Contest. It should be a DQ win for Perez but maybe that makes too much sense?
Perez’s record is now 26-10 with 1 No Contest while Mudaerji’s record is now 19-7 with 1 No Contest. Moving on.

GOOD- Jake Matthews vs. Carlston Harris
They start slowly but things heat up quickly, as Matthews attacks with aggression and nails Harris with some good combinations. The second round begins with Harris pulling guard so the next five minutes are spent with Matthews working his ground-and-pound as Harris tries for some submissions. The third round starts with immediate big strikes from both men. Matthews responds by blasting and dropping Harris with a big right hand. Matthews follows him down and works more ground-and-pound until the fight ends. We go to the judges to render their verdict.
Matthews wins the decision to improve to 23-8 while Harris drops to 19-8 and has lost 3 straight fights. Good win for Matthews.

GOOD- Kai Asakura stops Cameron Smotherman
Asakura comes out swinging and showing off his speed. Asakura hurts Smotherman then finishes him off with two powerful left hooks that end the fight not quite two minutes into the first round.
Asakura improves to 22-6 while Smotherman drops to 12-7 and has lost 3 straight fights. Good win for Asakura.

GOOD- Sergei Pavlovich stops Tallison Teixeira
Pavlovich is quickly out of the gate, launching powerful punches that drop Teixeira and as he swarms the referee is forced to jump in to stop the fight thirty-nine seconds into the first round. Wow.
Pavlovich improves to 21-3 and has won 3 straight fights while Teixeira drops to 9-2. Good win for Pavlovich.

GOOD- Alonzo Menifield stops Zhang Mingyang
Both fighters come out swinging and this fight doesn’t seem like it’ll last long. They clinch on the cage for a while before the firefight resumes. Zhang hurts Menifield but he fires back and now Zhang is staggered. It’s left-right-left from Menifield and Zhang is down. Menifield pounces and the referee is forced to jump in to stop the fight a bit over four minutes into the first round.
Menifield improves to 18-6-1 while Zhang drops to 19-8. Good win for Menifield.

GOOD- Song Yadong submits Deiveson Figueiredo
Very tentative start from both fighters, neither man wanting to make a fight-ending mistake. Figueiredo remains elusive, even as Song tries to punch him. Song slips on the mat and Figueiredo follows him down and they grapple until the first round ends. The second round begins with some striking exchanges. Figueiredo keeps trying for takedowns but he dooms himself as Song grabs a tight guillotine that forces Figueiredo to tap with less than twenty seconds left in the second round.
Song improves to 23-9-1 with 1 No Contest while Figueiredo drops to 25-7-1. Good win for Song.

My new epic fantasy book is out. It’s called Kingdom of Zarias: The End’s Beginning. The exciting epic fantasy series Kingdom of Zarias returns with the 4th book in the series. After the harrowing events of Book 3 the residents of the Kingdom of Zarias continue on their paths. Serena Summers continues to learn and grow as a fighter, desperately seeking to become stronger before she loses anyone else in her life. Daniel Summers discovers new parts of the world that open his eyes to just how little he truly knows. A new hero, Lamar Abeers, arrives to join the fight against evil. Plus, Zach Summers, Tiana Highsmith, and Xavien Ekens continue their journeys with their friends, and a new ruler of Vhaharen is crowned. The world has found a little peace. However, that peace is only temporary. In a shocking act of violence, the monstrous villain Galren strikes from the shadows and changes the world forever. This is Book 4 in the series. There’s lots of action, magic, and monsters in the Kingdom of Zarias. It’s like a tabletop game in novel form. It’s on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and many other places. Also, my line of comic books are now available under the 3P Comics label. If you’re interested, I would greatly appreciate it if you would check it out and support me.
