UFC Fight Night: Magny vs. Prates was this past weekend and it
featured some exciting fights and finishes. Who won and who lost?
Let’s get to the rundown.
UFC Fight Night: Magny vs. Prates
GOOD- Mansur Abdul-Malik stops Dusko Todorovic
They exchange a few strikes to start before Abdul-Malik drops
Todorovic with a powerful combination. Abdul-Malik pounces and throws
a bunch of hammerfists as Todorovic works his way to his feet.
Abdul-Malik blasts Todorovic with a few knees that drop him again and
he smashes him with punches that force the referee to jump in to stop the fight a bit over halfway through the first round.
Abdul-Malik improves to a perfect 7-0 while Todorovic drops to 12-5.
Good win for Abdul-Malik.
GOOD- Luana Pinheiro vs. Gillian Robertson
They start off exchanging strikes until Robertson gets a takedown.
Pinheiro is right back up but Robertson won’t relent and they’re up and down a few times until they resume fighting on the feet. Robertson
keeps trying for takedowns and the first round ends. The second round
begins with more of the same, Robertson trying for takedowns and Pinheiro trying to keep her back with strikes. This continues
throughout the second round, with Pinheiro having some striking
success while Robertson can’t get the takedown she wants. The third round starts with Robertson catching a kick and getting a takedown.
Robertson unleashes a barrage of elbows that punish Pinheiro, though
she’s able to get back to her feet momentarily before being flipped back down. Robertson can’t get a fight-ending choke but nails Pinheiro
with more strikes before the fight ends. We go to the judges to render their verdict.
Robertson wins the decision to improve to 15-8 and has won 3 straight fights while Pinheiro drops to 11-4 and has lost 3 straight fights.
Good win for Robertson.
GOOD- Gaston Bolanos vs. Cortavious Romious
They start off trading kicks, with Romious being knocked off-balance
at one point. They start mixing in punches before Romious gets a takedown. They grapple for a bit before standing and they resume
striking. Romious lands a big right hand that hurts Bolanos before the
first round ends. The second round begins with Romious getting an immediate takedown. They’re up and down a few times as they grapple.
Romious tries a few different submissions but Bolanos is tough and they keep grappling. Bolanos begins blasting Romious with big elbows
that allow him to stand back up. Bolanos unleashes a fiery torrent of
elbows and takes Romious down as he continues smashing him. Romious
survives, though, and the second round ends. The third round starts with Bolanos getting a takedown and they’re scrambling now. They’re up
and down while Bolanos unloads with strikes. Romious is tough and is
fighting back, though. Romious gets a few takedowns of his own that Bolanos answers with elbows and the fight ends. We go to the judges to
render their verdict.
Bolanos wins the decision to improve to 8-4 while Romious drops to 9-3. Good win for Bolanos.
GOOD- Reinier de Ridder submits Gerald Meerschaert
We start with de Ridder as he works his kicks early. De Ridder gets a
takedown and they grapple for a moment before returning to their feet.
Meerschaert hurts de Ridder with punches and stuffs his takedown
attempts before de Ridder hurts him with a big elbow before the first
round ends. The second round begins with some striking exchanges
before de Ridder gets a takedown and they grapple for a while. The fighters are up and down and they continue grappling, with each fighter flirting with submissions and landing some good
ground-and-pound before the second round ends. The third round starts
with Meerschaert getting a takedown and they’re up and down again before de Ridder locks on an arm-triangle choke that forces
Meerschaert to tap a bit over a minute and a half into the third
round.
De Ridder improves to 18-2 while Meerschaert drops to 37-18. Good win for de Ridder.
GOOD- Carlos Prates stops Neil Magny
Magny starts with some kicks and jabs before trying for a takedown. He
can’t get it and Prates fires back at him as Magny is tenacious. Magny keeps trying for the takedown but Prates defends well. Magny is jabbing well until Prates drops him with a big right hand. Magny is
back up, though, and keeps trying for a takedown. Prates answers with
a devastating left hand that drops Magny and ends the fight with ten
seconds left in the first round. In real time it looked like the punch missed or was a graze but in slow-motion you could see that it popped
Magny in the right temple.
Prates improves to 21-6 and has won 11 straight, with 4 knockouts this
year alone in the UFC, while Magny drops to 29-13. Big win for Prates.
*************
UFC Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones (27-1, 1 No Contest) will defend
his belt against Stipe Miocic (20-4) on November 16 at UFC 309. Jones has said that if he wins his plans are either to retire or have a
mega-fight with UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Alex Pereira (12-2 MMA,
33-7 Kickboxing).
Jones says that Interim UFC Heavyweight Champion Tom Aspinall (15-3)
hasn’t done enough to warrant a fight with Jones. That’s ridiculous,
of course, and is a clear case of Jones just not wanting to fight the larger Aspinall. There’s no doubt that Pereira is a bigger star and would be an extremely dangerous opponent in his own right, but it’s
for sure that Jones wants to give himself as many advantages for a fight as possible.
That’s his prerogative and I don’t blame him for wanting to make as
much money as possible while he can. However, let’s not engage in
dismissing the accomplishments of Aspinall, who’s won every one of his
UFC fights except one in the first round, which was a second-round
finish. His only loss in the UFC came via injury.
That’s as solid a case as you can get. Jones can duck Aspinall if he wants but he can’t then act surprised if people don’t want to call him
one of the greats because of it.
My new epic fantasy book is out. It’s called Kingdom of Zarias: The End’s
Beginning. The exciting epic fantasy series Kingdom of Zarias returns with the 4th book in the series. After the harrowing events of
Book 3 the residents of the Kingdom of Zarias continue on their paths.
Serena Summers continues to learn and grow as a fighter, desperately seeking to become stronger before she loses anyone else in her life.
Daniel Summers discovers new parts of the world that open his eyes to
just how little he truly knows. A new hero, Lamar Abeers, arrives to
join the fight against evil. Plus, Zach Summers, Tiana Highsmith, and Xavien Ekens continue their journeys with their friends, and a new
ruler of Vhaharen is crowned. The world has found a little peace.
However, that peace is only temporary. In a shocking act of violence,
the monstrous villain Galren strikes from the shadows and changes the
world forever. This is Book 4 in the series. There’s lots of action,
magic, and monsters in the Kingdom of Zarias. It’s like a tabletop
game in novel form. It’s on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and many other places. If you’re interested, I would greatly appreciate it if you would check it out and support me. Also, here’s the link to my Compendium book about the Kingdom of Zarias series- KoZ Compendium Thank you
