HYDEN BLOG: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly from UFC Fight Night: Gane vs. Spivak

By: Frank Hyden, MMATorch Senior Columnist

UFC Fight Night: Gane vs. Spivak was this past weekend from Paris,
France and featured some exciting fights and a raucous crowd. Who won
and who lost? Let’s get to the rundown.

UFC Fight Night: Gane vs. Spivak
GOOD- Morgan Charriere stops Manolo Zecchini
They start off trading kicks before mixing in punches. Charriere lands
a few heavy kicks to the body and Zecchini is hurt. One more kick to
the midsection by Charriere and this fight is over. The referee runs
in to stop the fight not quite four minutes into the first round.
Charriere improves to 19-9-1 and has won 4 straight fights while
Zecchini drops to 11-4. Good win for Charriere.

GOOD- William Gomis stops Yanis Ghemmouri
They trade kicks throughout the first round with a few punches mixed
in as well. The second round begins with Gomis landing some
combinations that prompt Ghemmouri to try for a takedown. Gomis grabs
a guillotine before switching to a front choke and they grapple for a
bit before separating and the second round ends. The third round
starts with the fighters exchanging strikes. Ghemmouri acts as though
he got hit low but the referee doesn’t halt the action and Gomis wants
to pounce on his opponent as he turns his back. Then the referee jumps
in to stop the fight almost halfway through the third round. They
check the replay but the call stands, the fight is over. Gomis wins
and improves to 13-2 and has won 11 straight fights while Ghemmouri
drops to 12-2 and has his 9 fight winning streak snapped. Good win for
Gomis.

GOOD- Volkan Oezdemir submits Bogdan Guskov
They trade some early punches until Oezdemir gets a takedown. Guskov
fights his way back up but gets dropped by an Oezdemir left hook and
follow-up. Oezdemir mounts him and Guskov gives up his back, allowing
Oezdemir to lock in a rear-naked choke and force the tap not quite
four minutes into the first round. Oezdemir improves to 19-7 while
Guskov drops to 14-3 and has his 4 fight winning streak snapped. Good
win for Oezdemir.

GOOD- Benoit Saint-Denis stops Thiago Moises
They trade kicks and Moises gets hit low. After he recovers they
resume and Moises gets hit low again. The referee should have taken a
point there but whatever. Saint-Denis moves to only throwing punches
now and they’re both winging heavy strikes here. Saint-Denis gets a
takedown but Moises fights his way back up after absorbing some
ground-and-pound that bloodies him up. They’re trading and beating the
hell out of each other as the first round ends. The second round
begins with the fighters exchanging strikes before Saint-Denis gets a
takedown. Moises is back up but gets taken down again. Moises again
gets up but then taken down again. Moises turtles up as Saint-Denis
continues firing away and the referee jumps in to stop the fight with
about fifteen seconds left in the second round. Saint-Denis improves
to 12-1 with 1 No Contest and has won 4 straight fights while Moises
drops to 17-7. The French fighters continue to have great success.
Good win for Saint-Denis.

GOOD- Manon Fiorot vs. Rose Namajunas
They exchange strikes early before Namajunas gets stuffed on a
takedown attempt so they continue throwing strikes out. They’re
missing most of them but the announcers think Namajunas has a broken
finger. Namajunas tries for another takedown but can’t get it and the
first round ends. The second round begins with them exchanging again.
Fiorot goes down but it kind of looks like a slip as she’s right back
up and successfully defending another Namajunas takedown attempt.
Namajunas does have a broken finger. I later saw a picture of it and
it looks nasty. Not the worst thing ever and nowhere near close to the
most sickening leg break I’ve ever seen but still bad. Unfortunately,
a fighter named Dylan Reischman broke his knee in the most grotesque
way imaginable during his professional debut for Combate Global last
weekend. If you at all have a weak stomach I would recommend you to
stay away from viewing the clip. Just know that you won’t be able to
unsee or unhear it after you do. I hope that the young man has a full
recovery and is able to live his life to the fullest after this.
No easy way to get back to this fight after that detour so I’ll just
do it. The fighters bang heads towards the end of the round and Fiorot
is cut badly. The second round ends with a few more exchanges. The
third round starts with Namajunas coming out firing. Fiorot returns
fire and they exchange for the rest of the third round. The fight ends
so we go to the judges for the verdict. Fiorot wins the decision and
improves to 11-1 and has won 11 straight fights while Namajunas drops
to 11-6. This wasn’t a very exciting fight but the French crowd was
into it and Namajunas was dealing with that broken finger so I’m not
gonna be too down on this fight. Good win for Fiorot.

GOOD- Ciryl Gane stops Sergey Spivak
They’re trading early before Gane blocks a Spivak takedown attempt.
Gane is almost landing strikes at will here. Spivak is taking them for
now but eventually he’s going to reach his limit. That’ll come later,
for now, the first round ends. The second round begins with more of
the same. Gane is teeing off on Spivak as he has him pushed against
the fence. Gane lands two big right hands then a knee to the body.
Spivak is fading so the referee is warning him. Gane continues to
unload and the referee jumps in to stop the fight not quite four
minutes into the second round. Gane improves to 12-2 while Spivak
drops to 16-4 and has his 3 fight winning streak snapped. Good win for
Gane. The French fighters won 5 of the 6 main card fights, with the
6th not having any French fighters. You can’t ask for more than that.

My new fantasy book is out. It’s called Kingdom of Zarias: A Fight For
Survival
. It’s the third book in my epic fantasy Kingdom of Zarias
series and follows the adventures of the Summers siblings as they
fight to defend the world from an evil villain named Galren. This book
also introduces lots of other characters as the scope of the world
grows. There’s lots of action, magic, and monsters in the Kingdom of
Zarias. It’s like a tabletop game in novel form. It’s on Amazon,
Barnes & Noble, and many other places. If you’re interested, I would
greatly appreciate it if you would check it out and support me. Also,
here’s the link to my new Compendium book about the Kingdom of Zarias
series- KoZ Compendium
