HYDEN BLOG: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly from UFC 265 and Fedor Emelianenko’s next match is Timothy Johnson

By: Frank Hyden, MMATorch Senior Columnist

UFC 265 was last night and though it was weakened by the cancellation of Amanda Nunes defending her UFC Bantamweight Championship against Julianna Pena it was still a pretty entertaining show. Also, Fedor Emelianenko’s next fight is set. Let’s get to the rundown.

UFC 265
GOOD- Casey Kenney vs. Song Yadong
They traded strikes throughout the fight. Song threw and landed more strikes and that got him the split decision victory from the judges. Good win for Song.

GOOD- Angela Hill vs. Tecia Torres
Both women fought hard and showed good toughness to take the shots they each did. Torres won the decision based on her activity and output. Hill fought hard but Torres was just quicker and landed more strikes. Good win for Torres.

GOOD- Vicente Luque submits Michael Chiesa
Chiesa cut Luque and got a takedown in the first round but Luque reversed it and cinched in a D’Arce choke to get the submission about three and a half minutes into the first round. Good win for Luque.

GOOD- Jose Aldo vs. Pedro Munhoz
These guys beat the hell out of each other in the first round, with Aldo working the body effectively. The second round saw Munhoz turn it up as Aldo wasn’t as productive. He was still working the body, though, he just wasn’t as aggressive this round. The third round saw Aldo flip that switch as he started unloading on Munhoz. He showed good toughness here as Aldo laid into him with big strikes and kicks. Aldo won the decision and has now won two fights in a row. Good win for Aldo.

GOOD- Ciryl Gane stops Derrick Lewis
This was for the Interim UFC Heavyweight Championship. Gane avoided any major damage in the first round and chipped away at Lewis in the process. The second round saw Gane continue picking Lewis apart. He hit Lewis with legkicks and jabs and elbows. He hit him with knees in the clinch, put him on the fence, and just basically beat him up. Gane continued that in the third round as Lewis seemed hesitant to engage as much. He missed with a lot of kicks but he also just wasn’t throwing as much. I’m sure Gane peppering him with strikes wasn’t helping that either. A big right hook dropped Lewis and Gane poured it on, eventually forcing the referee to jump in to stop the fight. Good win for Gane as he becomes the Interim UFC Heavyweight Champion and will look to unify the belts soon. Gane was really impressive in this fight. I don’t think I can pick him over UFC Heavyweight Champion Francis Ngannou but I know I want to see that fight. Good win for Gane.

Fedor Emelianenko will face Timothy Johnson at Bellator Moscow on October 23rd. I know Fedor isn’t who he used to be but I can’t help it, I’m still excited to watch him fight. To me, he’s the best heavyweight of all-time. I don’t know what time this event will be on but I’ll definitely be trying to watch.

My new book has gone live on Amazon. It’s called Small Town Crime Cabal. It’s about a brother and sister who operate a drug and gambling ring in their small hometown. They want more, though, and hope to expand beyond the limits of where they grew up. That comes with a price, though, and the question becomes- are they willing to pay the price?
This is the first in my Brotherhood of the Streets series. It’s on Kindle Unlimited right now or you can buy it in e-book or paperback form. If you’re interested in it at all, I would greatly appreciate if you would check it out and support me.  Here’s the link to my book on Amazon- My Book      Thank you very much, have a good day.
