HYDEN BLOG: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly from Bellator 258 and UFC Fight Night: Rodriguez vs. Waterson

Bellator 258 and UFC Fight Night: Rodriguez vs. Waterson were this weekend. Let’s get to the rundown.

Bellator 258
GOOD- Michael “Venom” Page stops Derek Anderson
MVP peppered Anderson with lots of strikes during the first round. He dropped him a couple times and destroyed his nose. Anderson kept coming but the cageside doctor stopped the fight in between the first and second rounds because of Anderson’s broken nose. Good win for Page.

GOOD/BAD- Peter Queally beats Patricky “Pitbull” Freire by Doctor Stoppage TKO
Pitbull was landing some really good strikes in the first round. He also landed some good legkicks. Queally started off the second round better but Pitbull was still getting the better of it. Pitbull did get a big cut over his right eye, though. His cutman couldn’t get the bleeding to stop, so the cageside doctor stopped the fight in between the second and third rounds. Pitbull was leading the fight so it sucks that it was called.

GOOD- Anthony Johnson stops Jose Augusto
This was a Bellator Light Heavyweight World Grand Prix quarterfinal fight. Johnson was scheduled to fight Yoel Romero but he didn’t pass his pre-fight physical and was replaced. Back to the fight, Johnson was firing away in the first round, even hurting Augusto at one point. Augusto fought back, though, hurting Johnson and then dropping him with some big shots. Augusto kept firing but Johnson was able to survive, even getting a takedown late in the round. The second round saw Johnson drop Augusto with a huge shot and then finished him off. Good win for Johnson.

GOOD- Juan Archuleta vs. Sergio Pettis
They traded strikes in the first round, with Archuleta getting a few takedowns as well. Archuleta got another takedown in the second round, though Pettis landed more strikes. The third round saw Pettis continue his barrage of strikes, and that continued into the fourth round. Archuleta was able to get takedowns but Pettis was laying into him with strikes. It was looking like Archuleta was going to lose his Bellator Bantamweight Championship, and that turned out to be what happened as Pettis finished strong and got the decision victory. Good win for Pettis as he becomes the new Bellator Bantamweight Champion.

UFC Fight Night: Rodriguez vs. Waterson
GOOD- Phil Hawes vs. Kyle Daukaus
Both men delivered some heavy punishment to each other, but they took it. Hawes pummeled Daukaus with some big shots in the third round and that likely gave him the decision victory. Good win for Hawes.

GOOD- Gregor Gillespie stops Diego Ferreira
They fought hard and did a lot of grappling in the first round. More good grappling in the second round until Gillespie started unleashing on Ferreira and forced the ref stoppage. Good win for Gillespie.

GOOD- Maurice Greene vs. Marcos Rogerio de Lima
De Lima beat up Greene throughout the fight and got the dominant decision victory. Not a great fight in my opinion but not enough to go BAD. De Lima got the decision victory, good win for him.

GOOD- Neil Magny vs. Geoff Neil
To be honest, someone came over and people were talking during this fight so I was kind of distracted. It seemed pretty good, from what I could tell. Magny won the decision, good win for him.

GOOD- Alex Morono stops Donald Cerrone
Morono came out firing and put it on Cerrone. Cowboy fought hard and gave out some good shots of his own, but Morono was too much and he dropped Cerrone, then finished him. I don’t know how much longer Cerrone wants to keep fighting, but it’s not looking good for his prospects. Good win for Morono.

GOOD- Michelle Waterson vs. Marina Rodriguez
More talking involving some family stuff distracted me. It seemed like both women were fighting hard, though Rodriguez was getting the better of it. Things looked close but Rodriguez got the decision victory, good win for her.
