MORNING WATCH: That time Lyoto Machida fought BJ Penn in Japan

On Friday, Lyoto Machida will face fellow MMA veteran Chael Sonnen at Bellator 222.

Machida’s upcoming Bellator bout will not be the first time he faced a high-profile former UFC fighter outside of the UFC.

Way back in 2005, Machida fought BJ Penn at K1’s, Hero’s 1, in Saitama, Japan.

Aside from being a unique fight between two future (and one former) UFC champions, the bout was also contested at openweight, with Penn weighing  in at 191 lbs and Machida at 225 lbs.
