MacDonald vs. Gracie official for Bellator 222 on June 14th at MSG

To start the week off, we have some of the biggest news to come from Bellator in a while. Bellator 222 adds one of the semi-finals of the Welterweight Grand Prix, which pits Bellator Welterweight Champion Rory MacDonald versus the up and coming Neiman Gracie. This is news that adds an incredible fight, to an incredible card. Already featured on the card is:

  • Dillon Danis vs Max Humphrey
  • Lyoto Machida vs Chael Sonnen
  • Darrion Caldwell (c) vs Kyoji Horiguchi
  • Heather Hardy vs TBA

In this fight, we have an undefeated member of the biggest family dynasty in MMA, that being Neiman Gracie, who holds a 9-0 record, winning his last fight against Ed Ruth. In the other corner is the champion, who oddly enough holds a 2-fight winless streak, having a draw in his last fight against Jon Fitch, and losing the fight prior to Gegard Mousasi via TKO in a fight for the Middleweight Championship.

Caldwell vs Horiguchi official for Bellator 222 on June 14th in MSG

The second title fight to land on the stacked card that is Bellator 222, has been a rumor for a very long time and has been expected since RIZIN 14. RIZIN 14 saw Caldwell lent to the Japanese company to challenge Kyoji Horiguchi for the inaugural RIZIN Bantamweight Championship, in which Horiguchi won via Round 3 submission. Since then, it seemed inevitable to see a rematch but this time for the Bellator Bantamweight Championship.

After his defeat to Phil Davis last Saturday, it was expected that McGeary possibly suffered some jaw related injury, but it was soon confirmed by McGeary himself on Instagram, as seen here. McGeary suffered a broken jaw, and lost a tooth in his defeat, suffering another major injury setback in recent fights.

Bellator 222 to be headlined by Machida vs. Sonnen

Despite the news of recent title fights being added to the loaded card, Bellator confirmed that the show will be headlined by Machida vs. Sonnen in MSG. It is also expected that this will be Bellator’s second PPV event, there last one being in 2017 at Bellator 180, which saw three title fights, as well as anticipated debut’s, and dream fights, that was headlined by the Wanderlei Silva vs. Chael Sonnen grudge match, so expect this loaded card to continue to stack.
