Do you think Ronda Rousey will compete in MMA again? What is your assessment of her as a pro-wrestler?

Robert Vallejos, Host – MMA Talk for Pro Wrestling Fans

I take it that Ronda Rousey is the type of person gives her all, and then completely checks out when she is no longer involved in said activity. Rousey divorced MMA and she does not seem to be keen on a reconciliation.

Week after week (CHEAP PLUG) on MMA Talk for Pro Wrestling Fans, I proclaim that Rousey has been a savant in the WWE. Although she can be awkward, she gives more of herself than most other celebrities who have crossed over to professional wrestling. Part of her appeal is that she is a big star, and so new at this. As she becomes more integrated, some of her luster may fade away. This will probably be a short ride, but it has been a fun one thus far.

I don’t particularly care to see it but I will watch if she does. She was soundly beaten in her last two fights and I imagine that if she returned it would be similar to Lesnar’s return in the sense that I doubt she is currently training to improve as a fighter. I don’t think she would come back with good striking, and I think she would be the same limited fighter that she was when she was competing. It worked for a while but those days are long gone and won’t be coming back. She would probably do big numbers though and perhaps a rematch with Holly Holm at some point could make sense. I am not sure what else she could do aside from maybe a fight with Gina Carano or something like that though and I wouldn’t be surprised if she chooses to never compete in MMA again.

As far as her pro wrestling career goes I would say that it gone better than I expected. She seems to connect with the fans in a way and they seem to like her (at least they did when I last tuned in.) But it will be interesting to see what they do with her in the long term. Will she still be around in five years? Maybe…its always possible though that she is just trying to repair her “tough girl” image through wrestling and will attempt a Hollywood transition sometime in the future. That seemed to be her original plan before the down fall of her MMA career.

I could see her fighting once more, years down the road. I don’t know why she would want to, but that seems to be a thing among athletes in that some struggle to let it go. I think she’s done a good job transitioning over to wrestling. Good for her, that’s great, and I hope she’s happy.

I feel that Ronda Rousey has completely checked herself out from top level MMA. Just as she did with Judo, once she was done, she was done. That said, I could see her fighting again if it is a handpicked opponent type of situation. If Rousey is contractually able to, the idea of promoting an MMA card is something WWE should consider. Rousey fighting one more time against a fighter with a modicum of name value and even less talent would likely do good business.

Speaking of WWE, everything I’ve seen of Rousey in her time there has impressed me. Her debut at Wrestlemania has to be considered one of the strongest first time performances ever. There are some things about WWE’s presentation of Rousey that I don’t like, namely the overuse of the “Rowdy” Roddy Piper branding, but her performances have ranged from passable to excellent thus far. Considering how new she is to this, that is a huge win.
