ROUNDTABLE: Will the UFC have a successful Summer?

Yeah, I think they’ll have a good Summer. It’s all relative, though. You can’t compare it to past periods because they just don’t have the big names they did in the past. They don’t have pre-made superstars, or people promoting themselves, but they do have some good fights scheduled. I think they’ll have a good Summer. It won’t be great, but I think it’ll be good and exciting, especially for hardcore fans. I’m excited for it, but there won’t be as many casual fans excited for it as in years past.

The UFC will do well, as they always do. but how well is in question. There are some nice dream fights as I attested to in the recent roundtable question. Is Brock Lesnar UFC bound? Will Conor McGregor fight in the Octagon again? It’s the casual viewers that bring in the big numbers and casual viewers love big name fighters. CM Punk anyone?

I don’t see any real star power to warrant a yes. Jon Jones’ career is over, and he deserves it, so Jones versus Brock Lesnar is out. Anderson Silva can step in and be entertaining but he is not what he used to be. I just don’t see any convincing card that has me forking over $60.

Yes. There is plenty of star power in the UFC. Brian Ortega is skyrocketing to the front right now, especially after being the only fighter to finish Frankie Edgar. Current featherweight champ, Max Holloway, has his eye on Ortega as a title challenger.

Holloway talks a great game, he’s proven he has the skills to defend his belt, and Ortega is the best choice to push him to the limit.

Amanda Nunes and Raquel Pennington will serve as a primer to kick off summer when they meet on May 12. Nunes has been fantastic since taking over the women’s bantamweight belt and her fight against Pennington should be exciting since it is taking place in Rio de Janeiro. Depending on how the fight goes, one or both fighters could turn around and fight later in the summer.

And, let’s not forget, Robert Whittaker and Yoel Romero are going to have their dance on Jun 9 at UFC 225 at the United Center in Chicago.

I think the UFC is going to be just fine.
