“I think there were some technical mistakes in that fight that cost him the fight basically. I mean if you watch the first round and the beginning of the second, he was winning the fight, obviously, he was picking Diaz apart really. But there were a lot of shots that were kind of missing. He threw a lot more shots than he had to and I think maybe he rushed it a bit… I think if he takes his time and breaks him down, does what he does best, uses his speed a little bit better and maybe not concentrate on power as much, I think he will walk through Diaz.”
-Gunnar Nelson talks to FoxSports.com about his teammate Conor McGregor’s chances against Nate Diaz in a rematch.
Penick’s Analysis: It’s entirely possible McGregor makes necessary adjustments to beat Diaz in a rematch. He was indeed having success with a lot of his attacks, as evidenced by Diaz’s busted up face at the end of the fight, but an inability to sustain that offense – especially once he took a few flush shots himself – cost him. Figuring out how to keep the offensive output going through a full five round fight – or how to finish Diaz before getting hit, hurt, or finished himself – is what needs to be done if he’s going to win this rematch, whenever it may happen.
