Tony Ferguson missed out on a potential No. 1 contender fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov in April due to a medical issue, but he may have his next assignment in line for this July.
According to a report from MMAFighting.com, the UFC is targeting Ferguson for a fight with Michael Chiesa in a five round main event for UFC Fight Night 91 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Ferguson, the 32-year-old winner of The Ultimate Fighter 13, is riding a seven fight winning streak, impressing more and more each time out. That culminated in a submission win over Edson Barboza in one of 2015’s wildest fights and finishes.
Chiesa, 28, won the only live season of TUF back in 2012, and he’s gone 6-2 in the Octagon since then. He’s won three straight fights into this potential main event, submitting Jim Miller and then Beneil Dariush in his two most recent fights.
The UFC Fight Night 91 card will be the UFC’s first ever event in South Dakota, and will air live on Fox Sports 1 on July 13. That will be the fourth event in a seven day span for the UFC, coming after three Las Vegas events in three nights during International Fight Week.
