HYDEN BLOG: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly from UFC Fight Night: Sterling vs. Zalal

UFC Fight Night: Sterling vs. Zalal was this past weekend and featured some exciting fights and finishes and a lot of decisions. Who won and who lost? Let’s get to the rundown.

UFC Fight Night: Sterling vs. Zalal
GOOD- Ryan Spann stops Marcus Almeida
They trade strikes for a while before Almeida begins trying for a takedown. Almeida gets him down for a second but Spann is quickly back to his feet. They grapple some more and Almeida threatens with more submissions before the first round ends. The second round begins with Almeida doing the Palpatine. Thankfully he gets a hard warning for it. I’m sure that’ll stop him. Oh wait, he immediately does it again. Who could have seen that coming?As they’re trading strikes, Spann smashes Almeida with a left hook, right straight combination that drops Almeida and turns his lights out a little over two minutes into the second round.
Spann improves to 24-11 while Almeida drops to 5-3-1. Good win for Spann.

GOOD- Montel Jackson vs. Raoni Barcelos
Jackson immediately drops Barcelos with a head kick. Jackson pounces and is battering Barcelos but he survives somehow. Barcelos is getting beat some more on the feet before he gets a takedown. They’re up then down before the first round ends. The second round begins with Jackson connecting with some nice strikes but Barcelos takes them and grapples him to the mat and locks in a submission. Jackson makes it to the end of the second round, though. The third round starts with some fighting against the cage for a while. They’re up and down, as Barcelos hunts for a submission and locks one in before the fight ends. We go to the judges to render their verdict.
Barcelos wins the Split Decision to improve to 22-5 and has won 5 straight fights while Jackson drops to 15-4. Good win for Barcelos.

GOOD- Davey Grant vs. Juan Adrian Martinetti
They’re trading strikes early and often as the fight begins. Punches and kicks are flying from every angle as they batter each other. Grant’s using a lot of kicks. The second round begins with Grant swinging more kicks at Martinetti, who fires back with strikes of his own. Both men are showing good toughness and outstanding tenacity as the damage mounts. The third round starts with more violent striking exchanges. They continue cracking each other with power strikes until the fight ends. We go to the judges to render their verdict.
Grant wins the decision to improve to 18-8 while Martinetti drops to 17-2 and has his 15 fight winning streak snapped. Good win for Grant.

GOOD- Rafa Garcia vs. Alexander Hernandez
They’re trading strikes early until Garcia gets a takedown. Hernandez is up quickly but Garcia slams him back down. They’re back to their feet and trade a few strikes before the first round ends. The second round begins with Garcia pushing ahead and bloodying the face of Hernandez and they trade strikes. The third round starts with more of the same, as the violence continues unabated. Hernandez is a bloody mess by the end of the fight. We go to the judges to render their verdict.
Garcia wins the decision to improve to 18-4 and has won 3 straight fights while Hernandez drops to 18-9 and has his 4 fight winning streak snapped. Good win for Garcia.

GOOD- Norma Dumont vs. Joselyne Edwards
Edwards is firing strikes right away, with Dumont responding with some of her own attacks. Edwards tries for a takedown but Dumont fights it off for a moment before Edwards completes the takedown. They grapple until the first round ends. The second round begins with more striking exchanges. They continue beating on each other until the second round ends. The third round starts with more of the same, as each woman batters the other with strikes from all angles. They fight until the final bell so we go to the judges to render their verdict.
Edwards wins the decision to improve to 18-6 and has won 5 straight fights while Dumont drops to 13-3 and has his 6 fight winning streak snapped. Good win for Edwards.

GOOD- Aljamain Sterling vs. Youssef Zalal
They trade some single strikes until Sterling gets the fight to the ground. They grapple for the rest of the first round. The second round begins with both fighters trading strikes for a while until Sterling gets a takedown. They grapple for the rest of the second round. The third round starts with Sterling getting an early takedown. They grapple for the rest of the third round. with Zalal wrapping up a tight choke but Sterling is able to avoid danger.
The fourth round opens with Sterling damaging Zalal’s leg with kicks before getting a takedown. Sterling works his ground-and-pound for a while and nearly gets the submission as he keeps beating on Zalal and the fourth round ends. The fifth round commences with some striking exchanges before Sterling gets the takedown he’s looking for. Sterling batters Zalal until the final bell. We go to the judges to render their verdict.
Sterling wins the decision to improve to 26-5 while Zalal drops to 18-6-1 and has his 8 fight winning streak snapped. Good win for Sterling.
