Just days after Jon Jones’ return fight against Daniel Cormier was made official for UFC 197 in Las Vegas, news has broken that he’s gotten yet another driving violation to address.
According to a report from local news station KRQE in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jones is set to appear in traffic court this week after being cited for driving without a license, registration, and insurance by a Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Debuty.
Per the report, the citation was given on January 31, and Jones has been summoned to court on Wednesday.
This would be the third known incident for Jones regarding his operation of a vehicle, following a DUI arrest in 2012 in New York and last year’s hit and run accident in Albuquerque. That last incident resulted in him being stripped of the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship, and it’s from that incident he’s now finally set to return.
The UFC has not yet made any comment regarding this latest incident, and it’s not clear whether it would have any effect on him fighting at UFC 197.
Penick’s Analysis: While simply a moving violation here, the concern could be how it might affect the plea deal he reached regarding the hit and run. If there was wording in that deal regarding things he needed to do or avoid regarding his driving privileges, this could hurt him. If not, it’s not nearly as serious as it could be. Now, if he’s driving without a license because he doesn’t have a license, then it’s yet another serious lack of judgment on his part and something he should be avoiding at all costs. He’s clearly not shown responsibility behind the wheel on multiple occasions, so this is both not surprising in the least and disappointing to see yet again.
