UFC Featherweight Champ Conor McGregor is expected to face Rafael dos Anjos for the UFC Lightweight Championship on March 5 at UFC 197, but he may have some legal issues to get out of the way first.

According to a report from TMZ Sports, McGregor is under investigation by Irish authorities due to an image he posted on Instagram. The photo shows a man that appears to be McGregor in a ski mask, pointing a rifle out of an expensive looking vehicle, also expected to be his, with the caption “Put the fight game in the bag and step away from the vehicle.”

Here’s the post in question:

It’s clearly an attempt by the Irishman to be clever, but he’s running into trouble due to Ireland’s gun laws. It’s likely the weapon in question is an Airsoft pellet gun and not a real gun, as he had also posted videos of himself shooting Airsoft pistols earlier in the week, but he may have violated Irish law by even brandishing a pellet gun in public.

It’s unclear what types of charges he could potentially face, and there’s no guarantee any ultimately come forward, but for now there’s an investigation ongoing.

Penick’s Analysis: McGregor’s got to be cognizant of the spot he holds. He likely feels untouchable at this point, but he’d be far from the first athlete to wind up getting tripped up in the out-of-sport pitfalls that so many star athletes have gotten caught in time and time again. Now, I don’t think he’s going to face anything majorly serious here to begin with, but it will hopefully wind up as a sign for him to be a bit less reckless in the future.
