Khabib Nurmagomedov pegs Anthony Pettis-Eddie Alvarez winner, Nate Diaz as options for UFC return

Khabib Nurmagomedov is continuing on his road to recovery, and he’s got a couple of potential opponents in mind for when he finally returns this spring.

According to a report from Wednesday’s UFC Tonight program on Fox Sports 1, Nurmagomedov has his eyes on the winner of next week’s Anthony Pettis vs. Eddie Alvarez bout, and also has “unfinished business” with one Nathan Diaz.

Nurmagomedov has been out of action for nearly two years, with multiple injury delays taking him out of a couple different announced fights. He’s likely to get back into contention upon his return, as his last fight saw him defeat current UFC Lightweight Champion Rafael dos Anjos.

Penick’s Analysis: He’s in a spot where it might just depend on what the UFC does with dos Anjos’ next fight. If Conor McGregor comes up and they have that champion vs. champion fight, Nurmagomedov against the Pettis-Alvarez winner is a significant contender fight for late spring. If McGregor stays down, and Pettis beats Alvarez, that rematch is possible, at which time a Nurmagomedov-Diaz fight could be booked. The Pettis/Alvarez matchup could also be booked if Tony Ferguson gets moved into a title fight. Regardless, Nurmagomedov simply needs to get back in the cage against anyone to remind fans about who he is and what he can do.
