HYDEN BLOG: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly from UFC Fight Night: Barboza vs. Chikadze

By: Frank Hyden, MMATorch Senior Colmunist

UFC Fight Night: Barboza vs. Chikadze was last night. Let’s get to the
main card.

UFC Fight Night: Barboza vs. Chikadze
GOOD- Gerald Meerschaert submits Makhmud Muradov
Muradov dropped Meerschaert twice in the first round and nearly
dropped him a third time. That would have been the end of the fight if
this were Punchout! but Meerschaert survived the round. Meerschaert
took some more punishment in the second round until he hurt Muradov
with some left hands and drug him to the mat. It didn’t take long
before he locked in a rear-naked choke and got the submission 1:49
into the second round. Big comeback from Meerschaert, good win for
him.

GOOD- Andre Petroski stops Michael Gillmore
Gillmore got slammed to the mat a few times in the first round but
Petroski couldn’t get the submission. They beat each other up in the
second round. Petroski got a takedown late in the second round that
might have been the difference to the judges if the fight went to
decision. Petroski got a quick slam takedown in the third round and
started unleashing his ground-and-pound. He laid into Gillmore until
he got the win three minutes and twelve seconds into the third round,
good win for him.

GOOD- Daniel Rodriguez vs. Kevin Lee
They traded a lot of strikes in the first round until Lee got a
takedown. Nothing much came of it, though. The second round saw more
strikes until Lee got the fight to the ground. They got back up
shortly, though, and resumed beating each other up on the feet.
Rodriguez turned up the volume in the third round but Lee got another
takedown. The striking of Rodriguez was the difference, though, and he
was rewarded with the decision victory. Good win for him.

GOOD- Ricky Turcios vs. Brady Hiestand
Turcios landed a lot more strikes and had a few takedowns. Hiestand
landed several takedowns but it was the damage done by Turcios that
won him the decision. This was a close fight, though, and featured
multiple great exchanges of striking and grappling. Both men left it
all in the cage, as they would say, and this was an exciting fight.
Good win for Turcios.

GOOD- Bryan Battle submits Gilbert Urbina
The first round was very close. Urbina landed some good elbows and did
some nice damage. The second round saw Battle turn it up. Urbina
fought back with some big strikes but Battle got the fight to the
ground and locked in a rear-naked choke to get the submission win two
minutes and fifteen seconds into the second round. Urbina landed more
strikes and had more takedowns but Battle fought hard and got the win.
Good win for Battle.

GOOD- Giga Chikadze stops Edson Barboza
Lots of kicks in the first round, including some really hard ones.
Both men started working the body in the second round and doing
damage. Chikadze stunned Barboza with a big right hand and then
unloaded some big combinations. Chikadze unloaded more big shots to
get the win 1:44 into the third round. Good win for Chikadze.

My book has gone live on Amazon. It’s called Small Town Crime Cabal.
It’s about a brother and sister who operate a drug and gambling ring
in their small hometown. They want more, though, and hope to expand
beyond the limits of where they grew up. That comes with a price,
though, and the question becomes- are they willing to pay the price?
This is the first in my Brotherhood of the Streets series. It’s on
Kindle Unlimited right now or you can buy it in e-book or paperback
form. If you’re interested, I would greatly appreciate it if you would
check it out and support me.  Here’s the link to my book on Amazon- My Book Thank you very
much, have a good day.
