A fight seven years in the making is headed to the yet-to-be-announced UFC 204 event, as Combate in Brazil reports that Gegard Mousasi will face Vitor Belfort on Oct. 8.
The bout is expected to support the Middleweight Title bout between Michael Bisping and Dan Henderson in Manchester, England, though the UFC has yet to officially confirm the date or location.
Mousasi and Belfort were in talks for a fight back in the summer of 2009 for the ill-fated third Affliction card, but the bout never came together and the event was eventually scrapped. Mousasi has been calling for the fight for years at middleweight, and now it’s finally coming together.
The 30-year-old Mousasi has won four of his last five, with the loss in that stretch a somewhat fluky TKO after getting caught by a spinning back kick from Uriah Hall. He most recently knocked out Thiago Santos at UFC 200, and hopes to continue on a path towards a title fight in the UFC.
Belfort may be coming up on his last legs in the UFC, getting stopped and beat up badly in two of his last three fights. The 39-year-old has picked up two wins over the aforementioned Henderson, and holds a win over Bisping as well, but he’s out of the mix until he can put together another run. Given his age and recent performances, that may not come.
