UFC fans in South Dakota are getting one hell of a co-main event on July 13, as Wednesday’s UFC Tonight program on Fox Sports 1 revealed that bantamweights Michael McDonald and John Lineker will square off on the UFC Fight Night 91 event in Sioux Falls
McDonald, the 25-year-old one-time title challenger in the UFC’s 135 lb. division, returned in January after more than two years out of action, defeating Masanori Kanehara at UFC 195. The second round submission was his fourth stoppage win inside the Octagon, and moved him to 17-3 in his 20-fight career.
Former flyweight contender Lineker picked up his second straight win at bantamweight just last weekend at UFC 198, controlling the pace throughout a 15-minute bout with Rob Font for a clear unanimous decision win. He’s now 8-2 in ten UFC appearances, and brings a four fight winning streak into this event.
The July 13 card will air live on Fox Sports 1, headlined by a lightweight bout between TUF winners Tony Ferguson and Michael Chiesa.
Penick’s Analysis: I love this fight. Lineker wants to prove himself to be worthy of a title fight in the UFC, and while the fight with Font showed he can have success against a taller, rangier opponent, McDonald’s going to be a completely different test. The winner of this fight is going to be in a really good spot in the 135 lb. field, and it should be exciting as all hell for this card from Sioux Falls.
