Ross Pearson won’t be getting his desired rematch against Diego Sanchez, as MMAFighting.com reports that the UFC is targeting Sanchez for a fight against Joe Lauzon at UFC 200.
Sanchez, the original winner of The Ultimate Fighter, has been fighting in the UFC for 11 years, and has appeared 23 times in the organization during that span. He’ll enter this historic UFC event off a decision win over another longtime vet in Jim Miller at UFC 196 earlier this month.
Lauzon himself is a longtime lightweight vet in the UFC, making his debut in September of 2006 before entering the Ultimate Fighter season five lightweight tournament. He’s fought 20 times in the Octagon thus far in his career, with 13 documented post-fight bonuses in that stretch.
UFC 200 does not yet have any official fights, but the July 9 card at the brand new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas is expected to be headlined by a rematch between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz.
Penick’s Analysis: That’s a good fight for the preliminary card, especially if they try to use it as a Fight Pass draw as Sanchez’s bout with Miller was used. It works on Fox Sports 1 if needed, but it’s a proper use of aging vets in fights like this. Sanchez had one of his better performances in years against Miller, and though Lauzon’s been inconsistent herself in recent years, he’s still capable of entertaining fights himself.
