Mark Hunt’s KO over Frank Mir has him back on a winning streak in the UFC’s heavyweight division, which in itself is enough to put him in the “mix.” Though he talked about several rematches he’d be interested in taking, Hunt said Monday he’d be happy with any top opponent for his next fight.
“I want my rematch with those guys,” Hunt said in an interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “That fight with Stipe taught me a big lesson there, never to be so much over weight before the fight. It was a problem. So I won’t be doing that again.
“Any of them is fine. Any of the top-five guys would be fine.”
There are a number of significant heavyweight fights currently on the schedule, and Hunt says he’s going to keep himself ready in case something opens up for him.
“If someone pulls out, I’d rather fight sooner,” Hunt said. “So if someone pulls out, I’m your man. Give me a call.”
Penick’s Analysis: Hunt is almost always entertaining to watch, and he’s got the type of power that makes him formidable against any opponent in the field. If any of those top names winds up hurt at some point here in the next few months, Hunt as a late replacement would be more than suitable, so depending on what happens he might get his wish. Still, everyone’s tied up, so if he’s intent on fighting sooner he may have to take a non-top-five opponent.
