A highly intriguing welterweight matchup has been added to the UFC Fight Night event in Rotterdam this May, with the UFC announcing on Tuesday that Albert Tumenov will take on Gunnar Nelson.
Tumenov’s been on a very good run in the UFC since dropping a split decision in his debut. That includes five straight wins since that Feb. 2014 loss to Ildemar Alcantara, with three of those wins coming by (T)KO. In his most recent performance, he edged past Lorenz Larkin by split decision in a competitive fight.
As for Nelson, the Icelandic competitor will look to bounce back from a loss to Demian Maia in December at UFC 194, his second loss in his last three fights. He’s won five of his seven UFC bouts overall, submitting four of those opponents, but he’ll need a big performance against a tough fighter in Tumenov to work back into the top end of the field.
UFC Fight Night Rotterdam is the UFC’s first ever event in The Netherlands, headlined by a heavyweight bout between Alistair Overeem and Andrei Arlovski on May 8. Though broadcast plans haven’t been officially announced, it’s expected to be a UFC Fight Pass event.
