4 random questions going into UFC Newark

Lawler

UFC Newark is on Saturday, and here is four random questions about the card.

Can Robbie Lawler still go?

Since his epic encounter with Carlos Condit in January 2016, Lawler has gone 1-3 in the UFC. Of course, Lawler’s most recent loss to Ben Askren at UFC 235 is a bit of a misnomer, but that’s a conversation for another day. To be frank, Lawler has not looked the same since his bruising battles with Condit and Rory MacDonald. At 37, Lawler’s window is rapidly closing. Colby Covington might represent  Lawler’s final path to a title shot.

Is Colby Covington draw?

Okay, this one is cribbed from Michael Hiscoe, but hey, good commentary is good commentary.  As a persona, Covington can elicit a reaction, but does his outlandish personality translate into revenue for the UFC. Those who defend Covington, claim that he is playing a character to get attention. If his first main event slot does not equal ratings…was it all worth it?

Will UFC fans embrace an earlier start time?

While UFC Newark is taking place in well Newark, New Jersey, the time of the event is more in-line with the UFC’s international cards. With the prelims starting at 12 pm ET, and the main card getting underway at 3 pm ET, UFC fans will go from sacrificing their Saturday night, to sacrificing their Saturday afternoon. One would think that the time slot change would be welcome, but this is the internet.

Can Mickey Gall stop his current skid?

Mickey Gall is really well-known for a fighter with a 5-0 record. Gall’s successful callouts and ensuing submissions of CM Punk and Sage Northcutt in 2016 (One guy is no longer in the UFC, the other is hanging on by a thread) have made the MMA community aware of him. However, his recent TKO loss to Diego Sanchez calls into question his viability as a UFC fighter. Can he reassert himself against Salim Touahri?
