The co-main event takes place in the welterweight division where Demian Maia returns to the cage for the first time since dropping a decision to Tyron Woodley at UFC 214. He steps into the cage against fast rising Colby Covington who enters the fight riding a four-fight win streak.
The main card also includes Pedro Munhoz vs. Rob Font, Francisco Trinaldo vs. Jim Miller (in his final fight), Thiago Santos vs. Jack Hermansson and John Lineker vs. Marlon Vera.
Main Card
(1) John Lineker (29-8) vs. Marlon Vera (10-3-1) – Bantamweight 135 lbs.
ROUND ONE: Lineker looking very reserved in the first round. Both fighter exchange leg kicks. Lineker started letting his hands go in the last minute.
ROUND TWO: Both fighters come out a lot more active. Vera hits a nice head kick followed by some knee strikes in the clinch. Lineker returns the favor with a spinning heel kick to the stomach of Vera. Good heavy strikes by Lineker in the final minute of the round.
ROUND THREE: Both fighters come out mixing it up with striking. Vera lands a couple of nice knees to the face of Lineker. Lineker avoids Vera’s last couple of attempts at offense to end the round.
Result: Winner by Unanimous Decision JOHN LINEKER
Culver’s Analysis: This was a good striking affair. Lineker looked a little reserved overall coming off a broken jaw but still a good fight overall.
(2) Thiago Santos (15-5) vs. Jack Hermansson (16-3) – Middleweight 185 lbs.
ROUND ONE: Santos lands some heavy strikes to Hermansson’s head but Hermansson recovers. Each fighter exchanges strikes towards the end of the fight and Santos unloads a flurry of punches in the last seconds of the first round and puts Hermansson on the mat. The ref stops the fight due to strikes.
Result: Winner by TKO THIAGO SANTOS
Culver’s Analysis: Santos was looking for an opening to land heavy shots and he got his opportunity at the very end of the 1st round.
(3) Francisco Trinaldo (21-5) vs. Jim Miller (28-10, 1 NC) – Lightweight 155 lbs.
ROUND ONE: Miller and Trinaldo start out exchanging strikes. Miller goes for a left hook and gets taken down. Miller works out of it back to his feet. Miller ducks a strike and gets the takedown. Miller is unable to pass guard. The ref stands them up with 10 seconds left and they end the round striking.
ROUND TWO: The 2nd round starts with both men meeting in the center of the octagon exchanging shots. Trinaldo starts to walk Miller down. Trinaldo is throwing much heavier strikes than Miller. Miller goes for a takedown and commits to a guillotine but Trinaldo takes top position. Trinaldo starts dropping elbows and fists to end out the round.
ROUND THREE: The round begins and Trinaldo takes the center of the octagon. Trinaldo takes Miller down momentarily. It is starting to be clear that Miller is fading. They continue to exchange strikes when Trinaldo gets the take down again with a little over a minute left in the fight. The fight ends with Trinaldo delivering damage to a exhausted Jim Miller on the ground.
Result: Winner by Unanimous Decision FRANCISCO TRINALDO
Culver’s Analysis: Trinaldo looked very impressive against the bigger names Jim Miller. Miller looked like he gassed very early on and could not recover.
(4) Pedro Munhoz (14-2, 1 NC) vs. Rob Font (14-2) – Bantamweight 135 lbs.
ROUND ONE: Munhoz starts off with some good leg kicks early on. Font starts to land a plethora of head shots which busts Munhoz up. Munhoz catches Font with a left hook which shakes Font up. Munhoz ends up taking Font down and secures a nasty mounted guillotine for the submission victory.
Result: Winner by submission PEDRO MUHNOZ
Culver’s Analysis: This was an exciting fight overall. Munhoz pulls off a beautiful choke to hand Rob Font his first submission loss.
(5) Demian Maia (25-7) vs. Colby Covington (12-1) – Welterweight 170 lbs.
ROUND ONE: Maia landing some nice left hands. Covington is able to avoid the takedown early. Maia opens up a cut over Covington’s right eye. Covington lands a nice combo late in the round and is having good success with leg kicks. Maia shoots in and gets stuffed in the last thirty seconds of the round.
ROUND TWO: Maia landing some nice left hands. Covington is able to avoid the takedown early. Maia opens up a cut over Covington’s right eye. Covington lands a nice combo late in the round and is having good success with leg kicks. Maia shoots in and gets stuffed in the last thirty seconds of the round.
ROUND THREE: Both fighters start the round showing battle wounds. Fairly even exchanges going on. Maia continues to shoot for the takedown with no success. Covington is starting to control the striking game. Maia eats some good shots from Covington and Maia goes for the takedown but Maia has nothing left and is being held down on the mat. Covington bloodies Maia up with strikes on the ground to end the fight.
Result: Winner by Unanimous Decision COLBY COVINGTON
Culver’s Analysis: Covington put on a striking clinic and completely shut down Maia’s takedowns. Very impressive outing.
(6) Derek Brunson (17-5) vs. Lyoto Machida (22-7) – Middleweight 185 lbs.
ROUND ONE: Brunson starts out slow just trying to feel out the counter striker Machida. Machida attempts to come in and Brunson catches him with a left that puts him down. Brunson jumps on top of Machida and lands multiple strikes until the ref pulls him off.
Result: Winner by TKO in the first round DEREK BRUNSON
Culver’s Analysis: Brunson looked poised and was patient against the always dangerous Machida. I got to wonder if that is the end of Machida’s UFC career. His timing and chin have become suspect in the last couple of years.
