UFC Fight Night: Emmett vs. Murphy was this past weekend and featured
some exciting fights and finishes. Who won and who lost? Let’s get to the rundown.
UFC Fight Night: Emmett vs. Murphy
UGLY- Torrez Finney vs. Robert Valentin
This fight sucked. It’s almost an insult to call it a fight. That’s
being too harsh but this was a terrible fight. Finney got a couple takedowns in the first round, including a nice slam. Repeat that for
the second round and the third round involved a lot of clinch work against the cage. Given how the night went for most of the matches,
this of course goes the distance. The judges render their verdict.
Finney wins the Split Decision to remain undefeated at 11-0 while Valentin drops to 10-5 with 1 No Contest. Moving on.
GOOD- Ode Osbourne stops Luis Gurule
They start off trading kicks until Gurule gets a takedown. Gurule works a little ground-and-pound until Osbourne gets to his feet
shortly before the first round ends. The second round begins with Gurule firing off kicks while Osbourne answers with punches. This
happens again and Osbourne smashes Gurule with a powerful left hand
that drops him. Osbourne jumps on him and pounds him out with right
hands until the referee jumps in to stop the fight almost two minutes
into the second round.
Osbourne improves to 13-8 with 1 No Contest and snaps his 3 fight losing streak while Gurule drops to 10-1. Good win for Osbourne.
GOOD- Brad Tavares vs. Gerald Meerschaert
They trade strikes throughout the first round, Tavares having a bit more success while Meerschaert can’t get the takedown he keeps looking
for. The second round begins with more of the same, Tavares seeming to
land a bit more but Meerschaert is right there with him. Things haven’t really picked up, though, as neither man wants to make a
critical error. The third round starts with Meerschaert having more success this time but it’s not going to be enough. The fight ends and
we go to the judges to render their verdict.
Tavares wins the decision to improve to 21-10 while Meerschaert drops
to 37-19. Good win for Tavares
GOOD- Lee Chang-ho stops Cortavious Romious
They start off swinging at each other with bad intentions until Lee gets a takedown. Romious fights it and they’re grappling back and forth for a while until Lee wraps up a rear-naked choke but Romious
escapes and the first round ends. The second round begins with Lee
hitting Romious low but after the break they’re grappling and nailing
each other with strikes from all angles. Lee starts pouring on the damage and Romious can’t keep defending, prompting the referee to jump
in to stop the fight not quite four minutes into the second round.
Lee improves to 11-1 and has won 5 straight fights while Romious drops to 9-4. Good win for Lee.
GOOD- Pat Sabatini vs. Joanderson Brito
Sabatini gets an early takedown and goes to work, hunting for a submission. They grapple for a while before Brito starts to stand and
Sabatini slams him back to the mat and lands some damaging strikes.
They grapple more until the first round ends. The second round begins
with an immediate Sabatini takedown. Brito is good enough to stave off
anything too dangerous but Sabatini is dominating him here, staying on
top of him and blasting him with some nice strikes when he can and the
second round ends. The third round starts with more of the same.
Sabatini is on top and is just too good for Brito to deal with. At the same time, Brito is good enough to avoid being finished. It might not
have been the most exciting fight to watch, speaking for myself, but
Sabatini totally dominated and was extremely impressive here. The
fight ends so the judges render their verdict.
Sabatini wins the decision to improve to 20-5 while Brito drops to
17-5-1. Good win for Sabatini.
GOOD/BAD- Josh Emmett vs. Lerone Murphy
Tentative start to this one before they begin trading a bit. Murphy’s
movement looks like it’ll be an issue for Emmett and the first round ends. The second round begins with Emmett getting a shoving takedown.
Murphy is quickly back up and he fights off another Emmett takedown attempt. Murphy avoids damage for the rest of the second round. The
third round starts with some bombs being exchanged until Murphy tries
to hyperextend Emmett’s leg with some kicks. Not a fan of that junk.
Murphy’s having a lot of success with his striking but Emmett remains dangerous. We get an eyepoke and now we just need a low blow for the
Trifecta.
The fourth round opens with both fighters swinging for the fences and
landing some heavy strikes. A few more BS front leg kicks from Murphy
and an elbow to the crown of Emmett’s head. There we go, folks. Why
don’t they just make all fouls legal now? The fifth round commences
with some nice striking before Murphy uses his movement to avoid danger from Emmett while still doing some damage of his own. The fight
ends so we go to the judges to render their verdict.
Murphy wins the decision to improve to 16-0-1 while Emmett drops to 19-5. Good win for Murphy.
