UFC Fight Night: Lewis vs. Nascimento was this past weekend and
featured some exciting fights and a lot of decisions. Who won and who
lost? Let’s get to the rundown.
UFC Fight Night: Lewis vs. Nascimento
GOOD- Waldo Cortes-Acosta vs. Robelis Despaigne
Despaigne nails Cortes-Acosta right away with a strike, prompting an
immediate takedown. Cortes- Acosta works just enough ground-and-pound
to not get stood up for the rest of the first round, despite the boos.
The second round begins with Despaigne landing some hard kicks. They fight on the fence for a while before Cortes-Acosta lands an uppercut
then gets the takedown. The rest of the second round plays out like the first round, Cortes-Acosta doing just enough ground-and-pound to
not get stood up.
The third round starts with a staring contest before Cortes-Acosta lands some punches and another takedown. Cortes-Acosta
throws a lot more strikes during his ground-and-pound here before the
fight ends. We go to the judges to render their (easy) verdict.
Cortes-Acosta wins the decision to improve to 12-1 and has won 3 straight fights while Despaigne drops to 5-1 and is handed his first professional loss. Good win for Cortes-Acosta.
GOOD- Sean Woodson vs. Alex Caceres
Woodson starts off with some good looking jabs before Caceres fights back with some strikes of his own. They continue to trade strikes for
the rest of the first round. The second round begins with more
striking exchanges. Both men are landing well but Caceres seems more
active so we might be tied heading into the final round. The third round starts with more of the same, as they trade strikes. Caceres might be more active but Woodson might be landing the more powerful strikes. It’s so hard to say. This is a very close fight as we go to
the judges to render their verdict. Woodson wins the decision and improves to 12-1-1 and has won 3 straight fights while Caceres drops to 21-15 with 1 No Contest.
Solid win for Woodson.
GOOD- Carlos Diego Ferreira stops Mateusz Rebecki
They come out firing some strong strikes and both men are landing
well. Rebecki knocks down Ferreira with a big left hook and follows him down with some ground-and-pound as the first round ends. The second round begins with more powerful striking exchanges. Ferreira
gets dropped by a leg kick but is right back up. He’s battling back, though, with some good striking of his own. Rebecki gets a takedown
but Ferreira is quickly back up. Rebecki’s face is cut and swollen now and the cageside doctor comes in to check on things but the fight continues. Rebecki gets a takedown but Ferreira reverses and wins up
on top to end the second round.
The third round starts with Rebecki looking pretty bad. Both of his eyes are nearly swollen shut and his arm appears hurt or maybe he’s just protecting his ribs? Ferreira is
teeing off here, punishing Rebecki with powerful punches. They go to the ground, with Ferreira on top landing a big elbow and bloodying Rebecki even more. Ferreira lets Rebecki up just to take him down again and finishes him with ground-and-pound to force the referee to jump in to stop the fight with ten seconds left in the third round.
Ferreira improves to 19-5 while Rebecki drops to 19-2 and has his 16 fight winning streak snapped. Good win for the underdog Ferreira.
GOOD- Carlos Ulberg stops Alonzo Menifield
They come out swinging and Ulberg drops Menifield immediately,
pouncing on him until the referee jumps in to stop the fight just
twelve seconds into the first round. Wow. Ulberg improves to 10-1 and has won 6 straight fights while Menifield drops to 15-4-1. Good win and display of power for Ulberg.
GOOD- Joaquin Buckley vs. Nursulton Ruziboev
After some feigning by both men Buckley gets a takedown but Ruziboev
is quickly back up. Buckley gets another takedown but lets Ruziboev up
and the first round ends. The second round begins with Buckley getting
another takedown. He lands some elbows from on top but then lets Ruziboev up. Buckley then throws Ruziboev to the ground and gets on
top, as both men throw strikes and the second round ends.
The third round begins with Buckley hurting Ruziboev with some powerful strikes.
Ruziboev fires back but gets dropped by a Buckley counter-hook.
Buckley gets on top and starts raining down punches and elbows. The referee decides not to step in, though. They scramble and Ruziboev hits Buckley with some axe kicks while he’s done so the referee halts the action. They restart on their feet and the fight ends. We go to the judges to render their verdict. Buckley wins the decision and improves to 19-6 and has won 4 straight fights while Ruziboev drops to 34-9-2 with 2 No Contests and has his 10 fight winning streak snapped.
Good win for Buckley in his hometown of St. Louis, MO.
GOOD- Derrick Lewis stops Rodrigo Nascimento
Lewis gets an early takedown but Nascimento is quickly back up. They clinch on the fence and trade knees. They separate for a moment before
clinching again, this time with Nascimento getting the takedown. They grapple until the end of the first round. The second round begins with
Lewis landing some strikes before the clinch and then landing some knees there. They’re in and out of the clinch and Lewis is throwing
bombs that will end the fight if they connect. He trips, though, and Nascimento gets on top and lands some heavy elbows before the second
round ends. The third round starts with Lewis throwing out a few strikes before catching Nascimento with a grenade of a right hand that
drops Nascimento. Lewis pounces and rains down strikes until the referee jumps in to stop the fight not quite fifty seconds into the third round. Lewis improves to 28-12 with 1 No Contest while Nascimento drops to 11-2 with 1 No Contest and has his 3 fight winning streak snapped.
Good win for Lewis.
