HYDEN BLOG: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly from UFC 272

By: Frank Hyden, MMATorch Senior Columnist

UFC 272 was last night and it featured some interesting fights,
headlined by the fight between former training partners Colby
Covington and Jorge Masvidal. Who won? Well, let’s get to the rundown
and find out.

UFC 272
GOOD- Sergey Spivac stops Greg Hardy
Spivac took Hardy down a couple of times and stayed on top, working
his way to mount before dropping bombs on Hardy and forcing the
referee to jump in to stop the fight a little over two minutes into
the first round. Spivac improves to 14-3 while Hardy falls to 7-5 with
1 No Contest and has lost his last 3 fights. Good win for Spivac.

GOOD- Kevin Holland stops Alex Oliveira
They trade kicks for the first few minutes, including one that drops
Holland for a moment. They then traded huge punches before going back
to the kicks. Oliviera got a couple of takedowns and applied a
rear-naked choke that the announcers thought might be it but Holland
gave a thumbs up and the first round ended. The second round started
and was quickly over as Holland blasted Oliveira with two right hands
that dropped him. He pounced on him and forced the referee to jump in
to stop the fight not quite forty seconds into the second round.
Holland improves to 22-7 with 1 No Contest while Oliviera falls to
22-12-1 with 2 No Contests and has lost his last 4 fights. Good win
for Holland.

GOOD- Bryce Mitchell vs. Edson Barboza
Mitchell dropped Barboza with some early punches. Mitchell utilized
some ground-and-pound until Barboza was able to get up towards the end
of the first round. The second round saw Mitchell quickly get another
takedown and that’s the round, he worked his ground-and-pound to blood
Barboza. The third round was more of the same. Mitchell got Barboza to
the mat and then beat the hell out of him. He punished him with some
big elbows and won the dominant decision. Mitchell remains undefeated
at 15-0 while Barboza falls to 22-11. Good win for Mitchell.

GOOD- Rafael dos Anjos vs. Renato Moicano
First off, I have no idea why this was a five round fight. I
understand dos Anjos was supposed to headline a previous card and then
his fight was moved to this card but why keep it five rounds? I don’t
get it. Anyway, dos Anjos got a few takedowns in the first round and
applied some ground-and-pound. They stayed on the feet for longer in
the second round, trading some big strikes before dos Anjos got the
takedown. The third round saw them continue throwing and landing some
big strikes. Some head kicks by dos Anjos wobble Moicano and they go
to the mat. Moicano survives some vicious ground-and-pound and the
round ends. The fourth round sees Moicano take even more damage and
his left eye is looking bad. They’re back on the mat and dos Anjos is
just laying a beating on Moicano. He’s tough and survives but it’s
rough for Moicano. The fifth round sees Moicano get up after an early
dos Anjos takedown and he starts laying some big leather onto dos
Anjos. Credit to Moicano for working his butt off as he could have
easily folded. Instead he put a little pain on dos Anjos. It wasn’t
enough, though, and dos Anjos picked up the clear decision victory to
move to 31-13 while Moicano fell to 16-5-1. Good win for dos Anjos.

GOOD- Colby Covington vs. Jorge Masvidal
They traded strikes in the first round, with some clinch and ground
work for most of the round. The highlight was a big elbow from
Covington on the break towards the end of the round. The second round
sees them trade strikes before a low blow halts things. They restart
and trade more strikes. Covington hurts Masvidal with some big left
hands. The third round sees Covington get a takedown after a little
striking. The round ends without much action. The fourth round sees
them fighting on their feet and both guys seemed to get hurt at
different points. Good toughness shown by each during this fight. The
fifth round is more of the same, with Covington trying to advance to a
better position from the seated position behind Masvidal with one hook
in that Covington was in for large parts of the fight. Covington gets
the clear decision victory and improves to 17-3 while Masvidal falls
to 35-16. He’s lost 3 fights in a row but two of those were to UFC
Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman. Good win for Covington.

My new book is now out. It’s called Kingdom of Zarias: Undeath and
the Dewester Set
. It’s a fantasy epic that begins with the Summers
siblings but spreads out to encompass a large number of characters
across multiple stories as the world faces a threat from a vile
necromancer. There’s lots of action, magic, and monsters in the
Kingdom of Zarias. It’s like a tabletop game in novel form. It’s on
Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and many other places. If you’re interested, I
would greatly appreciate it if you would check it out and support me.
