UFC 261 Review

Anthony Smith vs. Jimmy Crute

Light Heavyweight Fight

The 1st round started as the regular feeling out process, but Crute continued to land leg kicks on Smith, while Smith continued to pressure Crute with jabs.  Smith landed one big leg kick on Crute and it caused Crute’s leg to just stop working.  Crute found a way to get a pair of takedowns on Smith, but they made it to the end of the round.  The doctor stopped the fight in between rounds because Crute couldn’t stand on his leg.  The win goes to Smith by TKO.

Rating: 5/10

Result: TKO win for Anthony Smith due to injury in between rounds.

Uriah Hall vs. Chris Weidman

Middleweight Fight

This fight ended on the first strike.  Chris Weidman threw a leg kick and his leg simply snapped.  It was a very gruesome injury.  Best wishes to Chris. No Rating here.  Uriah Hall was incredibly respectful to Weidman after the fight was over, a very classy thing to do.

Result: TKO awarded to Uriah Hall because the fight stopped due to injury in the 1st round.

Women’s Flyweight Championship

Valentina Shevchenko vs. Jessica Andrade

The first round was all Shevchenko, she scored 5 takedowns. The 2nd round was even more dominant for Shevchenko.  She landed two more takedowns and then got the crucifix locked in and simply attempted to cave Andrade’s head in until the ref stopped the fight.  I want Shevchenko vs. Nunes, yesterday.

Rating: 8.5/10

Result: 2nd Round TKO for Valentina Shevchenko to retain her Flyweight Championship

Women’s Strawweight Championship

Zhang Weili vs. Rose Namajunas

Rose only needed 1:18 to win back her championship.  She caught Weiling with a head kick after luring her in.  The Jacksonville crowd went absolutely nuts.  Weiling was not willing to accept the result, she openly argued with UFC officials that she was ok to continue.

Rating: 9/10

Result: 1st Round KO for Rose Namajumas to become New Strawweight Champion

Main Event

Welterweight Championship

Kamaru Usman vs. Jorge Masvidal 2

The first round went to Usman on the scorecard for a takedown and some good ground control.  Masvidal landed some good shots as well.  Kamaru Usman found another way to win.  That’s the amazing thing about this guy, his striking was considered his weakness, and he just proved that’s not the case.  A thunderous right hand was the key to his win.  Usman showed he has even more cards to play.  Masvidal was extremely classy in defeat and said that Usman “has his number.”

Rating: 9/10

Result: 2nd round KO for Kamaru Usman to retain his Welterweight Championship
