All I want

Daniel Cormier has entered the cage with Jon Jones twice, and twice he has left disappointed. That isn’t stopping Cormier from wanting a third crack at his rival though, if anything, it motivates him. Cormier will be fighting Stipe Miocic next this coming August, but he told ESPN’s Ariel Helwani how badly he wants the Jones fight.

“It’s all I want,” he said (transcribed by MMAJunkie). “I think when I fight Jones, I feel most complete when I’m preparing for competition against that guy.”

Cormier elaborated that it’s important to him to get that win back over Jones (the second fight was overturned to a no contest after Jones failed a drug test).

“If you want to get right competitively, you go back and get the one you lost,” Cormier said. “If I don’t, trust me, I can be fine. But I’m just fiercely competitive. So when I say if there is another fight after (Miocic), it would have to be that one.”

And to get that win back, the UFC heavyweight champion Cormier does not want the fight to happen at heavyweight as many fans are speculating and hoping for.

“I have to get it right on the same terms,” he said. “I don’t need the deck stacked in my favor. My whole life I’ve overcome odds. I’ve faced uphill battle after uphill battle my entire life and I’ve always been able to get through it. This is one of the only things I’ve not been able to conquer. I need to go do it. I have to get it right.”

With Brock Lesnar out of the way, the third fight with Jones is likely the biggest fight Cormier has left on the table. But if he wants that to happen, he’ll have to get past Miocic on Aug. 17.

Tuesday Notebook

-Tony Ferguson put out a tweet claiming that he’s back. ESPN’s Brett Okamoto reported that Ferguson and his management met with UFC officials in Las Vegas on Monday. No fight has been announced but it appears Ferguson may be back in the cage soon.

-Matt Wiman will be returning to UFC to fight Luis Pena at UFC Greenville on June 22.
