UFC 234 POST FIGHT NOTES: Whittaker update, Silva talks McGregor fight

by Gary Meigs, MMATorch Contributor

First off let’s give everyone the latest update on Robert Whittaker. After constant urging from his family at 5 am Saturday, he made his way to the hospital. Doctors found his colon and intestine had perforated his stomach. If he had fought with this condition it could’ve turned deadly. As of this writing, he is out of surgery and his recovery time is 4-6 weeks.

Now on to the main event at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne Australia. We had one of the GOATS, a term that’s tossed around way to much but should be used sparingly. A 43-year-old 7-1 underdog went toe to toe with one of the best young rising stars the UFC has to offer Israel Adesanya. In a back and forth 3 round fight Israel Adesanya took home the unanimous victory 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27.

Asked how he felt after the fight Anderson said “I feel very happy. I wanted to do the best for my fans.”

This fight was built on two similar styles but Anderson Silva has a different perspective.

“I’m very impressed with Israel Adesanya but we have different games,” he said.

After tonight I think it’s safe to say we haven’t seen the last of Anderson Silva. Everyone knows of his desire to fight in his hometown of Curitiba, Brazil. He was asked if he could pick his next fight and told reporters “I want to fight Nick Diaz.”

The other opponent he brought up would be a huge fight. Responding to a question regarding a tweet by the Notorious Conor McGregor “it would be an honor to fight Anderson,”  Silva had a simple answer.

“It would be interesting,” Silva said. The legend of Anderson Silva grew tonight even in defeat. He was able to hold off the clouds and give us one more day of sunshine.
