Despite Georges St-Pierre unequivocally stating he’s ready to come back, UFC President Dana White refuses to believe that’s actually going to come to fruition.
During a media scrum on Friday, White said he doesn’t think the former Welterweight Champion has the mentality to get back into the cage.
“Georges St-Pierre will not fight again,” White said (transcribed by MMAFighting.com). “I’ve said that before and I’ll say it again. Georges St-Pierre is done. He is retired. He will not fight again… He doesn’t have to tell me that. I’ve dealt with him. We’ve been dealing with this thing. I’ve been in this since I was 19 years old. I know the mentality of a fighter that wants to fight and I know the mentality of a fighter that does not want to fight.
“He’s been saying that for a long time. I wholeheartedly believe you’ll never see Georges St-Pierre in the Octagon again unless he’s cornering somebody.”
White’s pessimism towards St-Pierre’s return isn’t shared by UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta, who said just earlier in the week that it’s a point on which the two of them differ.
“That’s the one thing we disagree on,” Fertitta said in an interview with the LA Times. “Dana’s been right so far, but we’ve been in active discussions with [St-Pierre’s] management for a long time. We’d love to have him back, he’d make a great impact.”
Penick’s Analysis: Let’s not forget, White said on Thursday afternoon that Anderson Silva wasn’t stepping in to fight Daniel Cormier, and that’s only one of the numerous examples of White flat out lying to media. He’s not a trustworthy narrator. Now, he may very well believe that nothing comes of talks with St-Pierre, but he’s not the one trying to get the deal done right now, either. So White’s comments here can’t be taken as anything resembling a certainty.
