Floyd Mayweather says the only way he fights again is if it’s against UFC’s Conor McGregor

Floyd Mayweather continues to try to keep talk of a fight with Conor McGregor going, now saying the only way he comes back to fight for a 50th career time is if it’s against the UFC Featherweight Champion.

“If I do fight, it’s only against Conor McGregor … not against nobody else,” Mayweather said in a video interview with ESNews (transcribed by FoxSports.com). “Because this matchup is so intriguing. You have [a boxer] against an MMA fighter — one of the best MMA fighters to ever … stand up and do it. He’s a strong fighter, and when I look at his fights, he’s a little faster than I thought he was.”

Mayweather thinks that, should they find a way to put the fight together, it’s a matchup which could break the record for pay-per-view buys he set with Manny Pacquaio in 2015.

“I think it will be so entertaining, if we can do it. If we can put a boxer with an MMA fighter. I can’t overlook that guy,” Mayweather said. “We haven’t made the fight happen yet, but if we could tweak a few things, I’m sure we could get him, not a good pay-day, but a great pay-day.”

Penick’s Analysis: There are plenty of reasons contractually why this won’t be put together, but were it to ever make its way to pay-per-view the interest from a casual fan standpoint would be massive on both sides. There’s a reason it has people talking to begin with, and though it remains at the very least as improbable a fight to actually be put together it will continue to be discussed so long as Mayweather and McGregor continue lending it credence.
