Kyoji Horiguchi had a dominant performance over Neil Seery on Sunday at UFC Fight Night 87, and he’s wanting to get back to another shot at UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson quickly.
“I wish I could have a rematch against ‘DJ’ as soon as possible,” Horiguchi said after the event (via MMAJunkie.com).
The 25-year-old Japanese flyweight got a shot against Johnson last April, losing by armbar in the final second of a 25-minute fight. That came in just his fifth UFC fight, and snapped a nine-fight winning streak. He’s since bounced back against Chico Camus, and then Seery.
“I wish I could have finished the fight fast,” Horiguchi said of Sunday’s bout. “I really was surprised [I didn’t knock him out]. I hit clean punches.”
Penick’s Analysis: Horiguchi’s shot at Johnson came too soon, and I don’t know that it would be right to rush him back in there. Of course, Johnson has a complete lack of challengers, so a spot could be open pretty quickly for him if that’s what he’s hoping for. He’s going to need to beat a higher level of opponent at this point to give more credence to him being a legitimate challenge to Johnson, given what we saw in the first fight.
