WSOF 29
MARCH 12, 2016
LIVE FROM GREELEY, COLORADO
Justin Gaethje is back in action tonight on NBCSN, defending the WSOF Lightweight Title against the man who won November’s one-night tournament in the division, Brian Foster. We’ll have results and commentary here tonight on the televised event, with full play by play on the Lightweight Title bout in the main event. Follow along here!
-Welterweight: Kris Hocum def. Josh Cavan via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
Note: Cavan finished strong in the third round with extended top game work in the final frame, but Hocum clearly won the first round and did enough to edge the second. Largely forgettable fight after the fact.
-Middleweight: Louis Taylor def. Cory Devela via technical submission (standing guillotine choke) at :29 of the first round
Note: One of the craziest, quickest submissions you’re going to see. Taylor locked up a standing guillotine immediately as Devela shot in, and Taylor just drove him to the cage, which put Devela out cold. Real nice work from Taylor for the quick finish.
-Heavyweight: Josh Copeland def. Mike Hayes via unanimous decision
Note: 15-minute heavyweight fight. Some damage done, some heavy strikes thrown, but more plodding and about managing to stay upright than anything else.
-Main Event: Justin Gaethje vs. Brian Foster (Lightweight Championship)
Round One: Foster popped in with a two punch combo, then pressed forward with a kick. Foster got in a nice step in knee. He got in another strike. Gaethje got in a couple strikes. Foster went down in what may have been a slip, and worked to his feet before Foster could do a ton. Gaethje blocked some strikes. Foster threw out a couple strikes. Foster’s left leg locked up on him and Gaethje started throwing more leg kicks. He landed a few more and Foster crumpled over in pain as his leg went out. Knee injury? Calf injury? Something went out on him and the fight was over with Foster in agony. Upon replay, clearly it was the knee. The final kick landed just above the knee and buckled it.
Winner: Gaethje via TKO (leg kicks) at 1:43 of the first round
Star Rating: (**) Wasn’t much to that one. Foster was getting in some solid offense, but he got hurt by Gaethje’s leg kicks and simply couldn’t continue. Somewhat unfortunate, and isn’t the type of finish that tells us a ton about either fighter, but it makes for a nasty highlight.
