Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones was reinstated to the UFC and cleared to return last fall, but no official date has yet been announced for his expected fight with Daniel Cormier. However, according to UFC PR head Dave Sholler on Saturday night, that could be changing soon.
During the post-fight press conference at UFC on Fox 18, Sholler said an announcement would be made in the coming days, adding, “Things are shaking out, and I think you guys are going to be pleased with the outcome.”
Jones and Cormier met for Jones’ title in January of 2015 at UFC 182, with Jones taking a clear decision to retain. Cormier captured the belt after Jones’ suspension last spring, and the two were being targeted to headline what would have then been UFC 198 in New York City in April. With that New York event no longer happening, plans have had to be a bit fluid, but they may still wind up fighting on the originally scheduled April 23 date.
Penick’s Analysis: I would imagine they’ll still be fighting on April 23 at what will now be UFC 197, though with the UFC needing to add back the Memorial Day weekend event to the schedule in Las Vegas, that could be another potential date. They may also need to change the April date depending on venue availability wherever they’re needing to move for that pay-per-view event.
