Neil Magny scored his third bonus of 2015 on Saturday night, as he and Kelvin Gastelum took home $50,000 each for the “Fight of the Night” at UFC Fight Night 78.
Also receiving bonuses were Andre Fili and Marco Polo Reyes, who each scored stoppage wins on the prelims to take home “Performance of the Night” awards.
Magny and Gastelum had a fun five round battle in the night’s main event in Monterrey, Mexico, with Magny edging Gastelum by split decision. The late replacement took surprising control early, and in a reversal of what most expected to happen, it was Gastelum who came back strong late. Gastelum nearly had Magny finished in the fourth round off a pair of knockdowns, and then he ended with a strong fifth round as well. However, he lost the first three on two of the judges scorecards, leading to the decision in Magny’s favor.
Fili had perhaps his best UFC performance to date, impressively beating up Gabriel Benitez for several minutes before knocking him out with a head kick and some pinpoint follow-up strikes on the cage. Reyes scored a first round KO of his own, putting Cesar Arzamendia out cold in under four minutes.
