Ben Rothwell teases big news, now says UFC denying him spot on UFC Fight Night 79 “makes sense”

Well, it seems the UFC did have some other plans in store for Ben Rothwell, as the heavyweight teased out some big news to come on Twitter late Tuesday night.

Rothwell had tweeted earlier in the day that he’d been denied the opportunity to step in at UFC Fight Night 79 later in the month; he’d offered after the retirement announcement from Mirko Cro Cop, who pulled out of a fight with Anthony Hamilton on the card. However, the UFC apparently has something more important in store for Rothwell, who is currently riding a three-fight winning streak.

Penick’s Analysis: The logical assumption is that there’s been an injury to one of the top end heavyweights currently scheduled for an upcoming event, and Rothwell will be stepping in for said injured fighter. That could be Junior dos Santos, Alistair Overeem, Andrei Arlovski, or Stipe Miocic, or perhaps it’s not an injury at all and the UFC had plans to put him in against someone like Josh Barnett, or maybe Frank Mir. Regardless, it seems we’ll be finding out something pretty soon.
