Not that it was all that likely to actually happen, but there was no confrontation between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones on Saturday in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The two had gone back and forth on Twitter Friday, with Jones inviting Cormier to come out to the grand opening for the new Jackson-Winkeljohn gym in the city, and Cormier saying he’d be there. On Saturday morning, Jones was looking for Cormier, and let it fly on Twitter once again.
Too pussy to fight at the garden but flies all the way to Albuquerque to prove he’s a man #Scratchingmyhead you on your way pussy?

Thank you to all the people of ABQ who came out to support the Grand opening. Sorry you guys didn’t get a chance to meet my belt sitter #505

Cormier then responded with a picture that “showed” he was there. A very clearly altered picture.
I’m here they won’t let me in! Next time he has to come to the Bay! pic.twitter.com/xUezZqo63Q

That led to further (and expected) comments from Jones.
Did this idiot seriously just Photoshop a photo? Funny how not one of the thousand people who SHOWED UP saw you today. #Patheticattempt

I’m done talking with you for now Carlton Banks. You are losing this battle, let’s just prepare for the real one. #Unbelievable #NiceTry

Penick’s Analysis: Before anyone gets indignant about Jones’ comments, this is fight sport. He’s 100% in his right to trash talk an opponent regardless of the out of the cage issues he’s faced this last year. Returning right to a back and forth with Cormier in no way means he’s failed to learn from past mistakes, as this has nothing to do with drugs, partying, or making other poor life decisions out of the cage. This is very much in the realm of fighting and what happens between two rivals who don’t get along. Expect to see a lot more of this in the coming months until this fight happens again.
