Stephen Thompson added to what is a growing resume for a title shot at 170 pounds, even if he didn’t do so in stunning fashion.
Thompson and Rory MacDonald mostly stayed away from each other throughout what turned out to be a five round chess match. Thompson peppered MacDonald often with leg kicks and flashy strikes, but only landed a few shots that did any real damage. MacDonald, for his part, landed a few times in the later rounds, but was never able to sustain any real offense. He mostly looked confused and gun shy against Thompson’s unorthodox style.
Thompson made his case for a title shot in the post-fight interview, and at this point it would probably make sense to give him what he’s asking for.
Staying within the welterweight division, newly minted welterweight Donald Cerrone took the better part of three rounds to chip away at the legendary chin of Patrick Cote before finally putting the finishing touches on it in the third. Cerrone caught Cote with some hard punches that put the Canadian down and followed up with ground and pound that probably wasn’t necessary. The win opens up all sorts of interesting matchmaking for Cerrone, who is well-known for his willingness (and ability) to fight anyone, anywhere. anytime.
