Next Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 89 event in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, got a bit of a change on Thursday, as MMAFighting.com reports that newcomer Jonathan Meunier is stepping up to replace his injured Tristar teammate Alex Garcia against Colby Covington.
The 28-year-old Meunier brings a perfect 7-0 record into his UFC debut, and makes a fairly quick turnaround after a submission win just a month ago in his home province of Quebec. He’s stopped each of his seven opponents, scoring two submissions while stopping the rest with strikes.
Covington makes his fifth appearance in the UFC, and hopes to bounce back from the first loss of his career in his most recent bout. Also 28, Covington looked impressive through his first three UFC appearances, but he was taken out by Warlley Alves by submission in December at UFC 194.
Next week’s UFC Fight Night 89 event airs live on Fox Sports 1 from the TD Place Arena, headlined by the welterweight bout between Rory MacDonald and Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson.
