Conor McGregor may not get his chance at vengeance against Nate Diaz afterall, as UFC President Dana White says they’re in jeopardy of that fight not coming together if they can’t get Diaz to sign on soon.
“We’ve been going back and forth trying to make this fight happen, but the problem is timing,” White said in an appearance on Colin Cowherd’s “The Herd” on Fox Sports 1. “Now we’re running out of time. This fight is supposed to be Aug. 20 or something like that? I’ve already got Sept. 20 done. I got that card made, it’s done, and now we’re moving on to the next one.
“So we’re going to get to a point here where we’re running out of time and we’re just not going to be able to make the fight. So Conor is either going to have to pick a new opponent that he would like to fight or lose that date.”
Penick’s Analysis: If the UFC is willing to lose out on the fight yet again they’ll try to push McGregor to take a different fight. Otherwise they need to go a different direction for UFC 202, which could lead us into another 2009 situation where an interim title is created only for the title itself to get defended against someone else. At that point it was Randy Couture returning to fight Brock Lesnar while Frank Mir and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira fought for an Interim belt a month later. If they keep McGregor on this August 20 event regardless of whether or not it’s against Diaz, then I have no idea what other fight they’d go with, because the Edgar-Aldo winner is not going to be ready by then.
