Anderson Silva thought he had Michael Bisping beat at the end of the third round at UFC Fight Night 84, as he knocked him down and seemingly out with a flying knee at the horn. Instead, the fight continued on, and for a variety of reasons he wound up losing the decision after five rounds.
Silva had some choice words in his native Portuguese in his post-fight interview, but manager Ed Soares didn’t fully and accurately translate his comments. However, his words were translated in full by Brazilian reporter Guilherme Cruz at MMAFighting.com, and Silva’s feelings on the way things played out were fairly clear.
“Here’s the deal, you can’t win one way, they try to take it away the other way. That’s it,” Silva said. “You saw how that went, right? So, there’s nothing left to say. I fought for you, and that’s it. Thank you for the support. My family, I’m coming back home, I’m fine. Mission accomplished, mission given, but sometimes it’s like in Brazil, total corruption.”
Penick’s Analysis: There’s absolutely an argument that the fight should have been over after the third round. Bisping went out, wasn’t able to stand up immediately, and in the confusion it easily could have been called off. Silva still has only himself to blame for losing three rounds, though, because it was his own approach that cost him those frames, and no matter how much damage he did in the two rounds he won, that’s not how scoring works in this sport.
